About me

I’m Kate and I offer online and telephone counselling for young people and adults. I provide a calm, confidential space where you can talk openly about what has been difficult, without pressure or judgement.

My approach is relational and client led. I believe that feeling understood and supported is at the heart of meaningful change, and I work at a pace that feels right for each person.

I have over 14 years’ experience working in schools in Harpenden and St Albans, with extensive training in supporting children and young people. I continue to work in educational settings alongside my private practice, which helps me stay grounded in current practice and safeguarding standards. I support both students and staff, and my longstanding work in schools is a central part of what I bring to my counselling practice.

I have extensive experience working with neurodivergent clients and with LGBTQIA+ individuals, and I aim to offer a space that is inclusive, affirming and responsive to each person’s needs.

I also have a great deal of experience working with twins, both in my professional work and from my own lived experience as a parent of twins. This gives me a deeper understanding of the unique dynamics and challenges that can arise within twin relationships and family life.

Alongside my work in schools, I have also worked in secure adult institutional settings, which has shaped my understanding of trauma, resilience and the impact of challenging life experiences.

After many years working closely with different individuals and systems, I trained as a psychodynamic counsellor. This means that when it feels helpful, we may explore how past relationships and experiences influence your feelings and responses today. This approach can support deeper self understanding and longer term change, but we will always work in a way that feels comfortable for you.

I know how overwhelming it can be to look for a therapist for yourself or your child. To help you get a sense of how I work, I offer a free 15 minute phone call or online meeting. This gives us both a chance to see whether we might be a good fit, as the relationship between client and therapist is such an important part of the work.

I have a great deal of experience supporting people who have been affected by trauma. I am trained in Rewind Therapy, which can be integrated into ongoing counselling or offered as a short term piece of work. Rewind usually takes two or three sessions and can be helpful for people experiencing symptoms of PTSD or distress following a traumatic event. It is a gentle and contained approach, and you do not need to describe the trauma in detail for it to be effective.

I welcome young people and adults who are looking for a thoughtful and supportive space to explore their experiences. I am a registered member of the BACP and work in line with their ethical framework.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
