About me

When life feels overwhelming, confusing, or quietly painful, reaching out for support can be the hardest step.
Hi, I’m Kate from Blue Waves Counselling in Sowton, Exeter, offering trauma-informed counselling for adults who are navigating bereavement, grief, loss, chronic health issues, family issues, anxiety, depression, trauma, and life transitions. I provide a warm, compassionate, and non-judgemental space where you can explore what’s happening for you at your own pace — and begin to feel steadier, clearer, and more like yourself again.

Loss can take many forms.

Alongside bereavement following the death of a loved one — including miscarriage, pet loss, bereavement by suicide, and traumatic bereavement — I also support people experiencing living losses such as, estrangement, and caring for others. Living loss includes changes in identity and grieving linked to chronic health conditions, adult-diagnosed ADHD, coercive control or abuse, divorce, empty nest syndrome, estrangement, or retirement. These experiences can leave you feeling lonely, disconnected, overwhelmed, or unsure of who you are now.

How Counselling Can Help?
Does life feel like an uphill struggle, but you’re not sure why? Do you feel like you just can’t move past this? Do you feel stuck?
Are you feeling anxious, low, or worried about what lies ahead? Is a good night sleep a thing of the past?

I am an empathic trauma-informed counsellor in Exeter.
My strengths lie in helping you gently rebuild your sense of self, process what has happened, and move towards a future that feels safer, calmer, and more hopeful. I offer an inclusive, LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent-affirming counselling space. Whatever your identity, background or life experience, you'll be met with warmth, respect and curiosity—not judgement. Our work together will always be tailored to your individual needs. Whether you’re seeking help for a specific issue or more general emotional support, my role is to help you understand what you’re going through and to support you in creating meaningful, lasting change.

I understand how difficult it can be to take that first step and ask for help. Counselling offers you the opportunity to slow things down, make sense of your thoughts and feelings, and develop a clearer understanding of yourself. Many clients find that anxiety eases, brain fog lifts, and they feel calmer, more grounded, and more able to cope.

Counselling is not only for moments of crisis. It can also support personal growth, improved relationships, and a deeper connection to yourself, helping you build a more fulfilling and balanced life.

I believe grief has two parts: the loss itself, and the rebuilding of life afterwards. With warmth, care, and a non-judgmental presence, I walk alongside you as we face your loss together and begin the process of rebuilding.

What Clients Often Share.
Clients often describe their counselling sessions as life-changing. They report feeling seen, heard, understood, and lighter, with a deeper awareness of who they are and what they need moving forward.

I support clients across Exeter and the surrounding areas, such as Cranbrook, Ottery St Mary, Honiton, Topsham, Woodbury, Broadclyst, Pinhoe, Clyst St Mary, as well as those choosing online or e-mail counselling. I work with a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties. These include bereavement counselling, low self-esteem, menopause, infertility, new diagnoses, such as; ADHD, FND, Lupus, RA, Parkinson's, and cancer.  Also, relationship difficulties, family issues, friendship break-ups, pre-trial therapy, and periods of change or uncertainty in life.

Life Experience.
Before training as a counsellor, I spent 25 years working in education, which means I am particularly well placed to support Teachers and young adults in Exeter and online. I hold an advanced DBS.

Rewind Therapy in Exeter
I also offer Rewind Therapy in Exeter, either as a one-off session or as part of longer-term counselling. Rewind Therapy is a gentle, evidence-based approach that helps reduce or remove the emotional intensity attached to traumatic memories. It can be effective for PTSD and trauma, without requiring you to revisit distressing experiences repeatedly.

Counselling Rooms in Exeter & Online Sessions.
If you choose in-person counselling in Sowton, Exeter, I work from beautiful, purpose-built therapy rooms designed to help you feel comfortable and at ease. There is free off-road parking, wheelchair-accessible parking, a ramp for the small stairs, and the counselling room itself is wheelchair accessible (please let me know at the time of booking). Complimentary hot/cold drinks and snacks are available to settle you in whilst you wait.

I also offer online counselling, with a relatively flexible weekly schedule. This can be particularly helpful for shift workers, people with fluctuating health, and Teachers with after-school commitments. E-mail counselling is also available for anyone who cannot find the words and prefers to write them down.

If you’re ready to begin counselling in Exeter online or by email, I’d love to hear from you.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
