About me
We all struggle in life at times, and seeking support is the first step to change. This can feel uncomfortable, if not impossible, so I feel privileged to work with people on their life’s journey and look forward to the opportunity to work alongside you.
I provide a safe and supportive environment for in-person sessions in Buxton or Whaley Bridge in the Peak District as well as online sessions as required. Your session will enable you to be yourself and explore what it is you need from therapy, without judgement. Therapeutic progress can then be made at your own pace. You are the expert on yourself, and I believe talking therapy is a potential path to unlocking areas where you may feel stuck or lost. Short-term interventions targeting specific areas are available as well as longer-term work, always guided by your needs.
My website can be found at Joncoopercounselling.co.uk. I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and can be found on their register as Jonathan Cooper, MBACP.
Training, qualifications & experience
Finding the right therapist, someone you feel you can connect with, is an important part of the therapeutic process. To help you decide whether working with me feels right for you, here are some areas I have experience of working with:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Trauma
- Feelings of difference and loss of connection
- Relationship difficulties
- Shame and self-esteem
- Major life events and periods of significant change
- Grief, loss and bereavement
- Supporting people living with life-limiting illness
- Neurodiversity- ADHD, AuDHD and Dyslexia
I understand that no two people, or experiences, are the same. I therefore work with what you bring to each session, responding to your individual needs and circumstances.
I am a qualified counsellor and a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). This reflects my commitment to professional standards and ethical practice. I primarily use a Person-Centred approach, incorporating Cognitive Behavioural Therapy techniques and coaching approaches where appropriate and when they may be helpful to you. Most importantly, I aim to provide you with the space to tell your story, explore your experiences and emotions, and be heard without judgement.
Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
