Integrative Counsellor & Psychotherapist. PG Dip, MA, MBACP

About me

Hi, I’m Jane.

Whether you are cautiously dipping your toe in the water regarding finding a therapist or have decided already, I understand it takes courage (and I believe strength) when you may be feeling vulnerable already but I warmly invite you to the supportive, friendly, safe and confidential space that lies at the heart of my therapy. I am a BACP registered Integrative Counsellor and Psychotherapist, trained to postgraduate level, who works from a non-judgemental and empathetic, person-centred base where you will be respected as, both, a unique individual and fellow human being. I work short and longer term with adults, covering a wide range of issues, in person from Clapham and online. I integrate Psychodynamic, Person-centred, Cognitive and Existential therapies, tailoring them to you, based on your needs and goals. Additionally, my practice is trauma-informed, drawing upon contemporary insights from trauma therapy and relational neuroscience which evidence the innate connection between body and mind.

I understand that some journeys in life are much more difficult than we could have anticipated, with unexpected, and sometimes prolonged, sources of difficulty, change and loss, which can understandably cause us to feel, not only sad, confused and anxious but challenge our sense of confidence, self-worth and identity. I understand that some losses and difficult life events can change us and believe we are entitled to grieve our losses in their fullness. We deserve support to adjust, without attempts to compare, fix us or downplay our emotions. I can travel, confidently, alongside you during these times, with empathy and compassion, offering regular therapeutic support and a safe space where you can prioritise your wellbeing and process your emotions freely. This can bolster your resilience and crucially help you feel less alone, foster your own resources and increase your capacity for self-compassion. I am interested in all your experiences and commit to always holding your more painful feelings with great care.

Maybe you are becoming aware that you are feeling emotionally stuck with certain feelings and circumstances and are unsure how to move forward. By addressing these emotions, often their hold on you loosens. Perhaps you are feeling stressed, depressed, anxious and overwhelmed with life or you have a less specific reason for coming to therapy and are instead searching for a greater sense of belonging, fulfilment and meaning in life.

My approach addresses symptoms but can also work on a deeper level to understand the root of issues, promoting more comprehensive, autonomous change in your way of thinking and being. If appropriate and always with great sensitivity, I can facilitate greater self-awareness of how past experiences and relationships, often from childhood, may influence your life today. This self-awareness can increase your self-compassion and self-acceptance, reduce feelings of shame and empower you to live according to your own true needs and values, more freely and with a greater sense of connection, leaving behind relational patterns and coping strategies that no longer serve you.

I'm aware we are all part of a long line of ancestry and cultural traditions which can impact us today. I will always respect, affirm and work with your lived experience and unique inter-generational and cultural context, including your gender and sexual identity.

As well as in private practice, I have worked with domestic abuse survivors and in charitable and community counselling services. In addition to depression, anxiety and loss, I have experience working with issues around self-worth, stress and burnout, childhood experiences, including adverse ones like historic child abuse (neglect and s/a). Also adult trauma and conflict/issues within families, workplaces and in personal relationships, including work place stress, domestic abuse, family estrangement, dating, divorce and separation. Also, health conditions, fertility issues, pregnancy and post-natal concerns, miscarriage and babyloss, peri/menopause, neurodiversity, bereavement, loneliness, life transitions, addictive behaviours, self-esteem, shame, anger, identity and many other issues.

If my approach resonates, please reach out by email or text to arrange your free, up to 20 minute, introductory phone call to ask any questions, discuss your motivation for coming to therapy and help you decide whether to go ahead and book a session. This can be a good way of finding out which therapist you feel most comfortable with. Our first session would then involve gathering more information about you and your needs, expectations and hopes for therapy. I offer weekly, fifty minute slots, at the same time, either in person in Clapham and Balham, or online at other times, including some evening slots.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
