About me
Does something from your childhood still feel present in your life today?
You might not know exactly how your childhood has affected you. You might just know that you're anxious, overwhelmed or constantly overthinking. Perhaps you struggle to say no, worry about upsetting people, don't trust your own judgement or find yourself repeating patterns that you don't understand.
You may be very good at looking as though you're coping while privately feeling very different.
Perhaps you experienced abuse as a child and have spent years carrying things you couldn't talk about, weren't believed about, or were told to keep quiet.
Or perhaps you lost a parent or someone very important to you when you were young. Although many years may have passed, you recognise that the loss has shaped you and still affects the way you experience yourself, life or relationships today.
You don't need to arrive at therapy knowing exactly why you feel the way you do. That's something we can begin to understand together.
How I work
Therapy with me is warm, down-to-earth and collaborative. I'll listen, ask questions, offer reflections and sometimes gently challenge you. There can be humour in the room alongside difficult conversations. You won't be expected to do all the talking while I simply sit and nod.
We work at your pace. You don't have to tell me everything in your first session, and you won't be pushed into talking about something before you're ready.
For some people, one of the most important parts of therapy is finally having somewhere they can say out loud what they've been carrying for years.
From there, we can begin making sense of what happened, how it may have shaped you and the patterns that are affecting your life today. As you begin to understand yourself differently, you can start to think about what you want now and what you might want to change.
I’m an integrative counsellor, which means I don't believe one type of therapy works for everyone. I can draw on counselling, EMDR and hypnotherapy depending on what you need and what feels comfortable for you.
The relationship we build is just as important to me as the therapeutic approaches I use. I want you to feel heard, respected and able to bring the whole of yourself to therapy.
I commonly work with:
Childhood abuse, including childhood sexual abuse
Emotional and physical abuse
Trauma and PTSD
Childhood bereavement
Grief and loss
Anxiety and overthinking
Low self-esteem and self-doubt
People pleasing and difficulty setting boundaries
Shame and guilt
Relationship difficulties connected to earlier experiences
Stress and emotional overwhelm
You don't have to identify with a particular diagnosis or know exactly what to call what you're experiencing.
If something from your past still feels present in your life today, we can explore it together.
Taking the first step
Reaching out to a counsellor can feel daunting, particularly if you've spent years dealing with things by yourself.
I offer a free 15-minute consultation before you decide whether you'd like to work with me. It's an opportunity to talk a little about what's bringing you to therapy, ask me any questions and see whether working together feels like a good fit.
There's no pressure to tell me your whole story during that conversation.
I work with adults aged 18+ and offer:
In-person counselling in Blackawton, near Totnes
Appointments at The Devon Clinic in Paignton
Online counselling across the UK
If you've reached a point where you want to understand how your past may still be affecting your life today, you're welcome to get in touch.
