Clare Hitchcock (MBACP, PGDip) CHILD & YOUNG PERSON THERAPIST
I am a fully trained counsellor and psychotherapist, registered with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP) specialising in helping children and young people between the ages of 5-25. I welcome individuals from any race, cultural background and sexual orientation. I am warm, kind and easy to talk to.
As well as working in the school setting, I also offer individual therapy on a short term or ongoing basis (currently online only). I also have experience and understanding of working with children who are home-schooled.
I am an integrative counsellor, working creatively, and tailor sessions to the individual's unique needs. My approach draws from psychodynamic thinking, attachment theory as well as neuroscience and developmental theory. My person-centred approach values the child and our therapeutic relationship.
When working with younger children I work closely with the parents, who will form part of the initial assessment. Children express themselves through play and metaphor, there is no pressure to talk or feel awkward. For online sessions, I use a virtual sand tray, this has proved very popular and is an invaluable tool especially during COVID-19, as it offers a similar play experience to face to face sessions.
I have a special interest in working with adolescents and understand how difficult it can be to take the first step into counselling. I have worked with issues including, yet not limited to anxiety, trauma, depression, self-harm and feelings of distress due to divorce. I invite you to bring anything that worries you, I will create a secure, safe space for you in a confidential environment, so you can be truly heard and together we can unpick your story and understand the worries together. I will not judge you or your family, I am here for you, to help you make sense of your feelings and experiences as well as build resilience and confidence.
I welcome calls of interest, this initial call is free with no obligation. If you wish to go ahead, we schedule an initial assessment and ongoing sessions, therapy usually takes place on the same day and time each week.
* Covid19 Update: All face to face sessions are now taking place online via secure video calling. Please call to arrange an assessment.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.
Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.
All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
