About me
Welcome
My name is Candice Bolton, and I am a practicing Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, offering both psychotherapy and counselling across Staffordshire and the West Midlands. I support individuals in navigating life’s challenges and helping them discover ways to enhance their well-being.
You may have arrived here because you're feeling depressed, overwhelmed, facing difficulties in your relationships, or struggling with painful emotions. Life might seem empty or unsatisfying at times. These feelings can be tough to face alone, but you don’t have to. Counselling and psychotherapy can provide a supportive space to work through these experiences. Together, we will build a strong therapeutic relationship that allows us to explore and navigate your feelings in a safe and collaborative environment, drawing upon my integrative model to help us to process and uncover deeper understanding.
About me
As an Integrative Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, I combine Humanistic Psychology, Object Relations Theories, and Psychoanalytic Self-Psychology to meet the unique needs of each client. My trauma informed, relational developmental approach focuses on understanding how past experiences shape the present while emphasising the importance of the therapeutic relationship. Once trust is established, we can explore the issues affecting you and work towards more fulfilling ways of being. I provide a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental space. My approach is tailored to meet your individual needs, ensuring that you feel heard and understood throughout our work together.
I understand that seeking help is a big step, and it can bring up a range of emotions—relief, uncertainty, or even anxiety. All these responses are completely normal. If you are unsure or simply want more information, feel free to book an introduction phone call, send an email or explore my website for further details about how I work.
A strong connection between you and your therapist is key to successful therapy. That is why I offer a free, no-obligation 15-minute phone call, giving you the chance to get a sense of whether we could be a good fit. Following this, we can arrange an initial assessment where we will discuss your current needs, what has brought you here, and how we can work together. I will also provide an information pack to help you better understand my approach.
While some people may find short-term therapy helpful, others may benefit from a longer-term process. I specialise in longer-term therapy, but I am happy to consider shorter-term support if that is what suits your needs best.
Counselling and psychotherapy require a regular, ongoing commitment to be most effective. Sessions are typically held weekly for 50 minutes unless otherwise agreed. The duration and frequency will be discussed in the initial session and reviewed regularly based on need.
Training, qualifications & experience
My experience
I have experience working with both young people and adults across a wide range of issues, in both short-term and long-term capacities. My work spans various settings, including schools, private practice, counselling centres, charity organisations, and online platforms. Currently, I work with clients in the East Midlands, West Midlands, and Staffordshire, with current availability in both Penkridge and Cannock. For those outside these areas, I offer a limited number of online sessions under certain circumstances.
My approach is trauma-informed and affirming of disability, neurodiversity, and LGBTQIA+ identities. I am committed to fostering inclusivity and diversity and supporting self-discovery. I also have experience working with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, including those who may feel disconnected from their communities or struggle to find belonging in the UK.
I offer a safe, accepting space where we can explore your unique experiences at your own pace. Together, we’ll find ways to support you and develop a shared language that suits your needs, whether sensory, artistic, or communicative.
My holistic, embodied approach acknowledges that life experiences are often stored in the body and can manifest in ways that may feel difficult or unhelpful. These might be emotions or patterns you wish to address or change. By working with the body and mind together, we can express feelings that go beyond words and connect with parts of yourself that may have been dismissed or hidden. This can allow for a deeper understanding and integration of your whole self.
My aim is to support you in integrating all parts of yourself and fostering stronger relationships—with both yourself and others. I believe healing comes from understanding and learning about ourselves more deeply, including the parts we might feel ashamed of, as well as recognising and celebrating our strengths. You are the expert in your life, and I’m here to guide and support you as we explore who you are together.
Special interests
My interests are working to resolve early relational childhood trauma, difficulties in relationships and working with complex and long-standing issues. In addition, I have worked with and have an interest in working with attachment and personality adaptations and disorders.
Qualifications
I hold a PGDip in Integrative Psychotherapy from Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute, and a BA (Hons) in Art and Counselling. As an advanced practitioner, I am currently undertaking further training and research at MSc level at the Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute to become an accredited Integrative Psychotherapist with the UKCP.
I adhere to the Code of Ethics and professional practice of UKCP, the BACP and The Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute (SPTI). I am a Registered Member MBACP of the BACP, a training member of the UKCP whilst I conduct further research at MSc level. A full copy of any of these bodies' codes of ethics can be made available on request. All my client work is supervised by a UKCP and BACP registered supervisor who supports me in my professional and ethical practice.
Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
