About us
Accessible counselling and emotional wellbeing support in Stockport. Every paid session helps fund therapy for someone else.
Adaptive Path Community CIC is a not-for-profit community interest company based in Stockport, Greater Manchester. We provide accessible counselling, emotional wellbeing support, EMDR-informed support and workshops for people who may be struggling with anxiety, trauma, addiction recovery, neurodivergence, emotional overwhelm, low self-worth, relationship difficulties, grief, stress or feeling stuck.
Our core belief is simple: support should adapt to people, not people to services.
Adaptive Path was created to widen access to therapy and preventative mental health support. Every person who pays for therapy with us helps make therapy possible for someone else. Our paid sessions help fund low-cost, subsidised and free support for people who may otherwise be unable to access help.
We offer a calm, respectful and trauma-informed space where people can talk honestly, feel heard and begin to understand what is happening for them. Our approach is relational, human and practical. We do not believe support should feel cold, clinical or one-size-fits-all.
People come to Adaptive Path for many reasons. You may be waiting for NHS support, unable to afford private therapy elsewhere, exploring ADHD or autism, recovering from addiction, living with trauma, feeling isolated, or simply finding life harder than usual. You do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out.
We offer support from £0 to £80 per session depending on circumstances, availability and funding. Where we can, we will help people find a level of support that is realistic and accessible.
Adaptive Path is rooted in the values of honesty, acknowledgement, acceptance and achievement. We aim to help people feel less alone, better understood, more emotionally steady and more able to move forward at their own pace.
Training, qualifications & experience
Adaptive Path Community CIC is led by Patrick Breheny, an experienced accredited counsellor and psychotherapist, EMDR-trained therapist and clinical supervisor.
Patrick is an integrative counsellor with a person-centred foundation and additional experience using trauma-informed, relational, Transactional Analysis, CBT-informed and EMDR-informed approaches. He has worked across private practice, community counselling, addiction recovery, trauma, anxiety, low self-esteem, bereavement, relationship difficulties, neurodivergence-informed support and emotional regulation.
Patrick is an accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and an accredited member of the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society. He is also a qualified clinical supervisor and has experience supporting counsellors, placement therapists and organisations around safe, ethical practice.
Adaptive Path works within clear safeguarding, confidentiality, supervision and governance structures. Where counselling or therapeutic support is provided, it is delivered by appropriately qualified, insured and supervised practitioners.
Our work is trauma-informed, neurodiversity-informed and community-focused. This means we pay attention to safety, trust, choice, collaboration, emotional regulation and the different ways people experience distress, communication, relationships and access to support.
Adaptive Path is still growing as a Community Interest Company, but it has been built on strong professional foundations, ethical practice and a clear commitment to widening access to counselling and emotional wellbeing support.

school Registered / Accredited
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
The National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society This Not For Profit association of counsellors and psychotherapists aim to support the counselling profession, members and training organisations. In 2013 the NCS register was accredited by the Professional Standards Authority under the Accredited Voluntary Register Scheme. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Additional information
Adaptive Path operates an access-based fee model.
Sessions range from £0 to £80 depending on circumstances, availability and funding. Standard paid sessions help fund subsidised and free support for people who may otherwise be unable to access therapy.
Where available, we offer: free funded sessions, low-cost or subsidised sessions, standard paid sessions, and online or in-person support.
We will always be honest about what is available at the time of enquiry. Free and subsidised places may depend on funding, capacity and suitability, but our aim is to make support as accessible as possible.
Every person who pays for therapy with Adaptive Path helps put someone else through therapy.
Further information
Adaptive Path is different from a standard private therapy service because our model is built around access.
People who pay the standard session fee help fund lower-cost and free sessions for others. This means that choosing therapy with Adaptive Path does not only support your own wellbeing; it also helps someone else access support who may not otherwise be able to afford it.
We offer support in Stockport and online, with a focus on creating a calm, safe and accessible route into counselling and emotional wellbeing support. We welcome enquiries from people who are unsure whether counselling is right for them, people who have had difficult experiences with services before, and people who may need support to take the first step.
We are particularly interested in supporting people who are falling between gaps in provision: those waiting for support, those who do not meet thresholds for services, those affected by trauma or addiction recovery, and people who need a more flexible, human and relational approach.
All enquiries are treated with respect and confidentiality. If Adaptive Path is not the right service for you, we will try to signpost you towards a more suitable option where possible.
