Susan Arnold MA, MBACP Snr Accred
If you are reading this you are probably looking for someone to help you sort out a problem of some kind.
I have been a counsellor for over 20 years working with people of all ages and from all walks of life. My aim is to support individuals and couples to explore their experience and make positive change in their lives.
I believe that the most important aspect of the work is to have a good relationship with your counsellor so that you feel able to talk about anything that concerns you however difficult, painful or embarrassing you may feel it is. I aim to work creatively with what you bring. I offer a safe space in which you can explore any issues that are troubling you.
I am trained as an integrative counsellor and I believe in working in a way that best suits you, I work in a confidential way in line with the ethical guidelines of the BACP and UKCP.
It can be hard to take the first step towards counselling. I am always willing to speak with you on the 'phone before you make the decision about whether or not to come to see me. I also offer a 30 minute appointment for people who are not sure about whether counselling is right for them, or want to meet me before deciding about counselling. I charge £10 for this.
I also offer online counselling and give more information about how I work in a separate section below.
Counselling is a very individual experience. You may only need a brief period of counselling to feel better, or perhaps you feel you want to spend a longer time exploring your inner world. I offer both brief dynamic therapy and open ended counselling and we would discuss what is right for you.
I work with individuals, and couples.
I have a valid DBS (formerly CRB) certificate.
I specialise in relationship difficulties, personal growth and life transitions.
My background in mental health nursing means that I am also able to work with people who have more complex mental health needs.
About Online Counselling
Many of the issues that bring people to face to face counselling can be worked with in online counselling. It is a different way of working, although at is centre as in face to face counselling is a safe and trusting relationship.
There are many different forms of online counselling. I offer two ways of working; email and instant messaging via skype. With email work you can send me an email and we will agree a time when I will respond. Usually we will have one email exchange each week. Email gives us both time to think about what we want to say and there is no pressure to type or think quickly. This can be helpful if you like to reflect on things for a while. Instant messaging happens in real time. We would agree a ‘session time’, which would be yours each week, which is more like face to face counselling and then we would ‘talk’ using text for 1 hour. This might suit you if you find it easier to have an immediate response.
People choose online work for many reasons including accessibility and for the some the security of being able to work from their own safe space and have time to reflect on what is being discussed. If you think you might be interested in this form of therapy, contact me and I will send you more information.
A Note on Stress and Anxiety
Increasing numbers of people are experiencing stress and anxiety. These can produce a negative effect on both physical and mental well being and put a strain on relationships. As a counsellor I cannot take away difficult or stressful circumstances in your life, but many people find that talking things through with someone who will listen carefully, without trying to offer solutions, can help them to find a new more helpful perspective, enabling them to cope better with the challenges life brings.
Although counselling normally takes place at the same time and day each week, this can make it difficult for people who work shifts to come for counselling. I therefore aim to offer flexible appointments for people whose personal circumstances make it impossible for them to attend at a regular time,
I work in a quiet and comfortable purpose built room which provides a private and tranquil space. There is parking outside. I am located on the outskirts of Storrington.
As an experienced therapist and trainer I am able to offer therapy for students during their training. I offer a reduced rate for student counsellors since I understand the many financial commitments required during training.
If you would like to find out more about having counselling with me please call me, text me or email me and I will respond as quickly as possible

People often wonder how 'just talking' to someone else can help when things are difficult. I start with the idea that just being properly listened to can help you to get a clearer idea of what is happening and become more mindful of yourself.
Counselling is not a 'quick fix' but an investment in you.
