About me

Hello and thank you for reading my profile.

I have over 23 years experience of working therapeutically with people, with a very wide range of personal issues.  I firmly believe that having someone independent to talk to, in a confidential space, is one of the most helpful things that we can do for ourselves. I offer a safe, non-judgemental and confidential space to talk. Where we can explore, what it is that is bothering or upsetting you. This exploration more often than not,  leads to self-insight, self-understanding and self-compassion. It can also as a byproduct, lead to some understanding of others.  Life for many of us appears to be getting ever more stressful and anxiety provoking. Issues such as anxiety, relationship insecurity, family problems, work problems, loss and bereavement, a feeling of 'no control', takes its toll on our physical and mental health and emotional welfare. Feelings of self worth can be significantly affected and our thinking ability to cope, can also be greatly affected. It is well documented that taking time for oneself, with the 'right'  counsellor, is very helpful. Having someone who will listen to you, in a safe environment,  offering complete confidentiality, with warmth and patience is known to be very beneficial, as the process begin's to help you to understand, your thought process', behaviour's and emotions.  More often than not,  when we explore what is troubling us and explore the affects on ourselves, a deeper self understanding begins to develop. Leading  gradually to an increased acceptance of ourselves and of our feelings, thoughts and emotions. It helps us to work out and contextualise, what it is to be human with all of its complexity. We begin to 'understand' ourselves, ultimately leading to us making better choices for ourselves. Changes are made,  and crucially, we can learn how to process, accept (or not) and even come to terms with the more difficult things in life. Even the things that we frustratingly cannot change, you may gain a deeper understanding of why and how that feels.

I am consistently told that my approach to counselling is 'refreshingly different' and that I am a 'down to earth' type of person, who is understanding and patient.   Don't worry if you don't know where to start, that happens a lot. Together we will find a way forward.

If you would like to take things further please contact me via text, phone or email and we can arrange a  first appointment.

Client Quote 'You have been there for me at the hardest time in my life. The most helpful thing has been, that you don't judge me, even when I am being difficult'.  (adult female)

My Practice

I work as an Independent Counsellor in Private Practice, providing a personal and confidential service. This means that the things we discuss will not become part of your medical records. Of course if you wish to inform your GP of our sessions you are free to do so.  Your personal information will not be shared with anyone.   Keeping your information confidential, is very important to me. It is also part of the 'code of practice', of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) whom I am a member of and I am also a Registered Practitioner.

(The exception to this is if a child or 'vulnerable adult' is at risk of serious harm).

Children and Adolescents Work

During my career I have also spent many years working with children and adolescents. When I work with children and adolescents I use a different approach. My approach is mindful of the different stages of a child's emotional development. Children and adolescents go through several different emotional and developmental stages and changes, before reaching adulthood. They see the world differently compared to adults. My counselling approach takes account of this. A younger child will normally experience the work as 'play' although it will be therapeutic play.

Parent Quote; ' My son has only seen you a few times and you have helped him to open up more to us, which has helped us talk more with him' (Parent of an older teenager).

Parent Quote; 'Since coming with my son his school work has really improved and home life is now much calmer. I think I have learnt how to deal with things differently, I don't worry so much about the small stuff'. (Parent of 12 year old)

Adolescent Quote;

"Thank you Shane, you have really helped me to understand my thoughts about my best friend dying. I have not been able to talk about it before, to anyone. I feel okay talking to you. Now I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I feel like I can carry on with my life now".

Outdoor Walking and Talking Nature Therapy Sessions;

I also offer outdoor, 'Nature Therapy' counselling sessions. This is where the work is done outside in a green natural environment. It might be in a park, some other open green space or even in a wood. Normally it involves simply walking and talking. However I can facilitate a deeper engagement with the natural environment and its therapuetic benefits via Ecotherapy techniques.  And if you have your own ideas even better.

Client Quote; 'I find being out in nature with Shane clears my mind quickly, it helps me think, I feel more relaxed. It is now my preferred way of meeting for our sessions'. (Adult male client)

Client Quote ; 'Now we have tried some outside session's, I prefer it to being inside the counselling room'.

The Room. I run my Private Practice from a comfortable counselling room in Grove Road, off Moulsham Street, close to Chelmsford town centre.  With public parking close by. I provide appointments during the day time only.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
