Finding the right person to talk to can be daunting and it might be difficult to make that first step, with this in mind, I offer a gentle, compassionate and confidential initial session to help you to feel comfortable and to test the waters to see if I am right for you.
I can help you explore things such as; stress, depression, self-confidence, shyness, relationship problems, loss, patterns of relating, childhood issues, self-awareness, anxiety, negative thinking, unresolved relationships, adjustment to change, sexuality, addiction, suicidal thoughts, loneliness or just wanting to understand yourself better.
I use a modern pluralistic approach to therapy which means that I use elements of many different and popular theories to tailor a service to best suit your individual and unique needs, listening very carefully to what you find helpful.
Moving forward, I will provide a safe, non-judgemental and empathic space for you to explore, reflect and challenge aspects of yourself, helping you to identify areas for growth and to facilitate positive change while at the same time expanding your self-awareness and strengthening your self-esteem.
My pluralistic approach to counselling and psychotherapy centres around collaborating with you to ensure you get the most out of your time with me. With firm foundations in Person Centred Counselling, I most commonly add elements from Cognitive Behavioural therapy (CBT) Psycho-education, Transactional Analysis (TA), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Gestalt, Schema Theory, Attachment Theory, Brief intervention theory, Mindfulness, Trauma Resourcing, Hope Theory, Psychodrama and Relational Theory.
I have a wealth of experience, working with adults, older adults and young people within private practice and previously, the NHS Depression and Anxiety Service, private and community healthcare settings and educational establishments.
I work from Psychotherapy Plymouth at the Waterloo Wellbeing Centre in Stoke, Plymouth PL1. (sessions in Plymstock can be accommodated)
Please feel free to email or text if you would like to ask about my service or book an initial session. Alternatively, we can arrange a mutually convenient time to speak via the phone if you prefer.
“I felt like Lucy really tried to get to know me as a whole person even in the short time that we had, she tried to understand my problems and also the things that I feel good about. Whilst talking to her I felt like the problems I am having are important and valid which was great because it is easy to tell yourself otherwise. It was so good to find someone that I could feel comfortable explaining exactly how I felt, she gave me time to think and helped me when I found it difficult to understand my thoughts. Seeing Lucy has given me hope that I can do something about my anxieties and beginning to understand them has made me feel much calmer starting university”. (2016)
"Working with Lucy helped me not only with everything I went to talk about originally but with other matters and issues I didn't realise I needed to look into, talk about and explore”. (2016)
"I had never attended counselling before but I have found these therapy sessions so helpful and would not hesitate to recommend Lucy to others" (2016)
"My Counsellor, Lucy was very kind and supportive, not judgmental in any way. I felt she cared about my wellbeing, I wish I could have seen her years ago. Thank you - you saved me in 2015"
"As I live alone, far from my family, I needed someone to talk to. Having someone who I can share my feelings, thoughts and behaviors with, who has no self intent, has been incredibly helpful. Lucy is non-judgmental and empathetic and allowed me to be totally honest, not thinking about someone's reactions, as I would with a friend or family member. I would definitely recommend Lucy as a counsellor."(2015)
