About me

I am an experienced, BACP registered, fully qualified counsellor and psychotherapist working in Brighton since 1999.

I work with individuals and couples either in short-term counselling for specific problems or long-term open-ended therapy to explore deeper issues.

I currently work in private practice from a central Brighton location. As well I provide online face to face counselling through VSee (like Skype but more secure). You will need to have your own VSee account and these are available free at VSee.com Please contact me direct for more information at www.andrewfchoyt.com

I offer a supportive, confidential and non-judgemental relationship in which you can explore the issues you choose to explore.

Many of the people I have worked with have come to counselling because they find themselves unable to cope with a particular issue or problem and are seeking a better understanding of that issue with the help and support of another person in confidence.

The counselling relationship is unique. I am there to work alongside you and will never tell you what to do. The help of the right therapist can empower self-growth, improve relationships, and reduce emotional suffering.

The model of therapy I use is known as integrative and brings together a range of therapies in a coherent appropriate manner. This model recognises that there is not a “one size fits all” approach and that there is greater benefit in drawing on other theoretical models when responding to the needs of the client.

I draw on person-centred, transactional analysis, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and solution focussed approaches and qualities I bring to the relationship are warmth, empathy, understanding and humour (when appropriate!).

I am committed to continuing professional development and attend regular training and workshops to inform and broaden my practice.

I undergo regular clinical supervision and hold full insurance in line with BACP guidelines and ethical codes for best practice. I am also a member at The International Society for Mental Health Online (ISMHO).

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a Post-Graduate Diploma in counselling from the University of Brighton (2001) and a SDCC Certificate in Counselling Skills from the Westminster Pastoral Foundation (1998). I also have a BA Honours in Art and design.

I have 13 years’ experience working as a counsellor at Brighton and Hove LGBT Switchboard’s Counselling project working with LGBT clients and have undertaken extensive study and training in issues affecting sexual minorities.

A particular area of interest and experience has been gained in working with clients around identity and their identity development, helping people to build a better relationship with themselves and others.

I also spent many years working in the public sector including the NHS (17 years). I teach public and mental health to other health care professionals and counsellors. Workplace stress, bullying and organisational change are other areas of knowledge and interest.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
