Profile

I provide private and confidential psychotherapy for children, young people and adults in a safe and therapeutic setting.  It can be very difficuilt deciding if any form of talking therapy is what someone may want.  I therefore offer the first appointment free of charge so that you can explore if this is the right time in your life to seek support.

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is the method of working with anxieties and patterns of behaviour whose origins may stem from very early experiences in childhood.  The aim is to understand current experiences of stress, anger management, depression, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, low mood, mental health difficulties, anxiety, bereavement or abuse.

This method provides a way of understanding how the present is experienced through an appreciation of how past experiences may bear upon it.  The therapeutic aim would be to understand how these experiences may be affecting you now, through a careful exploration of unconscious past representational ideas and dreams.

Those who wish to understand themselves more deeply may benefit from this method. It can be especially useful for those with long standing difficulties, which may stem from early traumatic experiences.

Please contact me by email or phone to arrange an appointment.
Other Areas of Therapuetic Support:

Infant Mental Health and Parenting
The process of becoming a parent can be a hugely significant period within ones adult life.  Often childhood memories can unexpectedly become very prominent.  Parenting Psychotherapy for mothers and fathers during this time can help to support this process.

Parent Infant Psychotherapy
Does your child struggle with sleeping, feeding, excessive crying, separation anxiety, toileting, failure to thrive, tantrums?  Are you tired of being told they will just grow out of it?  Do something more positive and seek support for your child and you with parent-infant psychotherapy appointments.

Early traumatic experiences in birth or antenatal care can leave a lasting imprint upon both the infant's mental health and the attachment relationship.  Using a specialist psychoanalytic model for working with infants and their parents together, early experiences can be processed, leading to improved physical health for your child and you.

Infants and Children with Autism

I have a particular interest in early infant mental health, and work with parents of infants who may be displaying early signs of autism at 12 months.  This early intervention model seeks to recover early signs of distress to help the infant/child make the most out of their early developmental years, and to help the parents support this process in the best way they can.  Older children with Autism can benefit from having their non-verbal communications processed and understood.  Child psychotherapy is particularly effective at working with autistic children to help them understand themselves and the often confusing version of the world they encounter.

Looked After and Adopted Children and Families
I have a special interest in supporting Foster and Adoption placements, through direct assessments with children and providing individual psychotherapy for very disturbed children.  Often children cannot put their early experiences of transition into words, using a non-directive play centred approach like child psychotherapy allows them to communicate pre-verbal emotional experiences.  Often this leads to their current placement becoming more stable.

I also provide ongoing parenting consultation appointments to foster and adoptive parents, to assist them in their understanding of their children.

What areas does it work on?
Child psychotherapists treat individual children and young people with a wide variety of difficulties. These include; Abuse, Behavioural disorders, Communication disorders such as Autism, Sever anxiety, Self Harm, Depression, Phobias, Eating disorders, Developmental problems such as bed wetting, Separation anxiety. Specialist support to Looked After Children.

Adolescent Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy can be very useful in helping to understand and support the experiences of adolescence and early adulthood. During this developmental phase earlier difficulties and traumas can be unexpectedly stirred up. Providing a framework for understanding these deeper levels of anxiety, can support the processes of individuation and personal growth.

What is child psychotherapy?
Child psychotherapy uses regular times and settings and the availability of the psychotherapists mind to establish an emotionally containing relationship in which the childs own view of the world can be expressed, through words and/or actions.

The work of the therapist is to find a way of carefully making this explicit to the child so that a shared insight into the childs way of functioning is arrived at.

Over time this understanding can be internalised by the child so that he or she can begin to understand their own feelings and behaviour.

Left untreated children and young people may respond to people and situations in ways they do not understand and cannot control. They may also develop more serious mental illnesses in adulthood.

We often find that children who begin to make some sense of their own emotional life in turn establish better relationships with those they are close to.
