About me
Imagine time set aside for you to focus on your concerns - for example life changing events; relationship issues; confusion about life - in a peaceful setting, supported by an experienced registered Fellow of the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society.
Barbara Hales has been counselling since 1985 in voluntary agencies and private practice in London, Devon and now Cumbria. She has also been the Personal Development Tutor on an M.Sc. course for healthcare professionals.
"I regard counselling as a journey", says Barbara. "It may be short or longer term, with the counsellor as guide and companion to help you to find out more about yourself". "I can help you to explore current life-issues or concerns, or to discover repeating patterns and past relationships which may be continuing to affect you", Barbara adds. "I believe that a counselling relationship of trust and respect, in confidence, can enable you to gain a new perspective on your situation, so that if you wish you can make new choices in your life".
Barbara has wide experience in the attentive listening involved in traditional counselling. She has trained in psychodynamic and in person-centred approaches, and is influenced by the ideas of C.G.Jung. Where appropriate, she can also offer other ways of working: using stories, dreams, drawings, or through a series of arrangements created in a sand-tray.
She adds that she has trained as a supervisor, and is able to offer supportive and creative consultation for counsellors, supervisors and other professionals.
"I am enthusiastic about providing a quiet space for individuals in isolated positions of responsibility, including medical professionals, clergy and headteachers, where they can explore issues with someone outside the situations, in complete confidence".
Barbara also runs small workshops as a 'taster' experience of creative therapy.
Your life may seem to lack meaning or direction, or you may be facing life-changing events such as pregnancy, a new job, moving house, changing relationships or retirement. Barbara Hales can help you to regard such changes as opportunities to re-assess, re-balance and re-vitalise your life.
