Supervision details

Non-managerial supervision for practitioners, individual and groups, in relation to their professional practice. Also available for trainees in their respective areas, and trainee supervisors, with concessionary rates available (please ask). I hold the Post Graduate Diploma in Consultative Supervision from the University of South Wales (Newport). In counselling and psychotherapy, supervision is an essential requirement for effective and ethical practice. This is emphasised in the codes of ethics from most registering bodies such as the British Psychological Society (BPS), the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and the Human Givens Institute (HGI). Carroll (1996) identifies 7 tasks of supervision: creating a learning relationship, teaching, counselling, evaluation, consulting, monitoring administrative aspects, and monitoring professional and ethical issues. The main model of supervision that I will be using is the Cyclical Model developed by Page and Wosket. We will ‘contract’ our work together, then ‘focus’ on the main aspects that are important to you, then there will be ‘space’ for you to explore, develop and reflect on areas of your work, then a ‘bridge’ area for discussion of ways to bring newly acquired knowledge and insight to work with your clients, then we will ‘review’ the work done so far and either move on or re-visit previously covered areas, it also provides an opportunity to check on the supervisory process and how it’s working for you. Embedded within the ‘space’ area we will use the Seven Eyed model of supervision to thoroughly explore the therapeutic process and relationships. Supervision sessions usually last for 90 minutes – please check with your registering body and/or training institution to see how much you require – but we can tailor these to meet your needs. The cost is £40 per 60 minutes or £60 for a 90 minute session. If extra supervision is required then we can work on the principle of £20 for every 30 minutes. Concessionary rates are available for trainees so please ask. Supervision can be face-to-face, or remote using a telephone or a webcam.

HGI
Human Givens Institute (HGI)

The Human Givens Institute (HGI) is both a membership organisation and a professional body representing the interests of those in the caring and teaching professions who have an interest in or utilise the human givens approach. Counselling Directory register Registered Members (MHGI) and Fellow Members (FHGI), who will have completed the Post Graduate Practitioner's Assessment (Part III) and who are fully qualified to practise as a human givens therapist or counsellor. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
