About me
There are periods in everyone's life when things can feel overwhelming. At other times we can find ourselves stuck, repeating habits or behaviours which are destructive to ourselves and our relationships - and yet we seem unable to stop. Therapy can offer relief, support and a way through these challenging and distressing times. Therapy can also be a wonderful opportunity to embrace change, personal growth and to explore our potential.
Human beings are complex, and how we are in the present is the result of nature and nurture - our life experiences, our background, our family, and our genes. Our reactions, emotions, personality traits and neural pathways may feel fixed. In fact those pathways are open to change - even if we feel we don't know where to begin or have any power to create any change at all.
The counselling I offer is rooted in an integrative approach. This means I am trained in a number of modalities including attachment theory, object relations, existential approaches, person-centred therapy, embodied approaches and several others. I am BACP registered. I have a PhD in Epidemiology, more than 25 years experience working in the wellbeing sector, and 12 years experience of teaching Iyengar yoga. I can and do draw on all of these relevant skills according to what is needed as sessions unfold.
Perhaps you are struggling with anxiety, low self-esteem, stress, relationship difficulties, an eating disorder, or are simply feeling sad and long to feel better. A loss or bereavement, or a history of abuse can lead to an emotional or behavioural crisis which you may need help coping with, or maybe you have long struggled with depression, or simply feel stuck. I work with all these issues, as well as many others.
I see clients in quiet and comfortable rooms in Dollis Hill (Jubilee Line), Queen's Park (Bakerloo Line), and in private practice on Wimpole Street in Marylebone.
Training, qualifications & experience
I have undertaken five years of training in integrative counselling and psychotherapy at the Minster Centre in London and hold a postgraduate diploma in integrative counselling. I am a counsellor for the charity Mind in London. I am a member of the professional body BACP and am fully insured.
My background is in the social sciences and wellbeing sector; an MA in and PhD in Epidemiology, a BA (1st class) in biological anthropology from Cambridge University, and I am an Iyengar yoga teacher with 15 years experience.
Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).
Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.
Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.
All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
