About me

Welcome! I am Sofia, a fully qualified Psychodynamic Counsellor & Psychotherapist (MA) working with adults and children. I am a Registered member of the BACP and a BPC Scholar. I am also a BPS Accredited Psychologist. I am originally from Greece that lived also in Portugal for a while and I now live in the UK. Wherever I have lived, I have always experienced a profound commonality between people. The fact that none of us is immune to emotional pain. And that it is never easy to bear that pain alone. The traumatic experiences, the anxiety, the intense emotions or grief. Sharing the burden of these experiences can make a difference.

Should you wish to untangle the complexities of these difficulties and, through the sharing of your personal narrative, identify and reclaim precious aspects of yourself, I too am eager to provide you with a safe, non-judgemental, non-directive space and to embark upon this journey with you.

I understand that seeking counselling can bring feelings of anxiety or fear—but it also carries hope. By building a genuine and consistent relationship rooted in curiosity and presence, we can work together to bridge past, present, and future. Through this connection, we can heal past wounds and create the foundation for healthier, fulfilling relationships.

Training, qualifications & experience

My name is Sofia Korachai, and I am currently a Clinical Doctorate candidate at the University of Essex, within the Department of Psychoanalytic Studies. My clinical doctoral research focuses on Female Subjectivity and Psychoanalysis. The primary objective of my studies is to further enhance my expertise and specialisation as a fully qualified Psychodynamic Psychotherapist and Counsellor.

I have experience in helping clients with relationship issues, trauma and abuse, coping with grief and loss, & depression. I work with my clients to create an open and safe environment where thoughts and feelings can be shared without fear of judgment. The psychotherapeutic treatment I provide is grounded in a psychodynamic framework, with a particular focus on unconscious communication, as well as the dynamics of transference and countertransference that may arise within the therapeutic relationship. I work mainly relationally as I believe that as social beings we are constantly shaped by our social contacts. My desire is the therapeutic relationship to be a model of a healthy attachement with the opportunity for a corrective emotional experience and unltimately a secure base from which my clients can explore the world.

I am a Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), an accredited Member of NCPS and adhere to their Ethical Framework, ensuring compliance with their guidelines for good practice. Additionally, I am a BPS Accredited Psychologist, specializing in Clinical Psychology, awarded by Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge.

My additional specialities include an MA in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and Counselling, expertise in Contemporary Interpersonal Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, a Postgraduate Diploma in Dramatherapy & one in Playtherapy, full qualifications in Lego Therapy and Special Education as I am also a Psychopedagogue. I provide individual and group therapy sessions for children, adolescents, and adults, offering both in-person and online formats. Furthermore, I facilitate therapeutic and reflective groups.

I have experience working with adolescents and children across various settings in the UK, including all-through schools, colleges, and charitable organisations. Additionally, I have contributed to the research sector stemming from my affiliation with Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, where I completed my studies. During this time, I worked under the supervision of Dr. Elizabeth Kirk in the University's Department of Developmental Psychology, and collaborated with esteemed researchers at the University of Central Lancashire and the University of Sheffield.

Maintaining strong connections with my hometown of Greece, I have been actively involved with the Athens Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy (ICPA) since 2014, assuming various roles that align with the Institute's philosophy of flexibility, professional development, and the promotion of innovative practices in psychotherapy. My focus is on both personal and professional growth, supported by the ICPA's clinical supervision programs, which are led by highly qualified professionals from Greece, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Additionally, I engage in clinical groups with the Institute's associates, whose warm encouragement fosters a nurturing environment for development. My goal is to acquire a diverse and comprehensive skill set that ensures personalized care and supports the professional retention of each client. During the present period, I am engaged in a collaborative remote working arrangement with the ICPA as a lecturer in the Institute's Education Department. Concurrently, I am collaborating closely with the students of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens who are completing their internships at ICPA. Our collaborative efforts are focused on matters pertaining to research literature, research methodologies, and the development of new research initiatives.
