About me
Introducing Myself
Hi there, I’m Sarah - a counsellor and psychotherapist. I throughly enjoy creating a safe space for people and listening to them tell their stories. I offer my clients thoughtful and tailored therapeutic support in achieving their goals. My therapy effectively helps individuals and couples become conscious of deeply repressed thoughts, emotions and problematic behaviour and communication to gain emotional regulation, control, peace and joy within their lives and relationships. I thrive in facilitating change in people or couples, whether that be a change in mood, supporting the clients to process and heal old wounds, change unwanted habits, improve behaviour and communication, or address attachment problems and support in reaching clarity and a solution.
How I work:
Individuals
Alongside my private practice, I work with referrals from NHS and BUPA as a High Intensity Counsellor and Integrative Psychotherapist. I work with a huge range of psychological issues and provide short and long-term therapy to a multitude of diverse clients and couples, within the age ranges of 18 to retirees.
Couples
Within my private practice I work with couples of all ages and stages within their relationship, who are struggling with attachment issues, stress, abandonment issues, RSD (Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria), parenting styles, sexuality, intimacy, communication styles, problematic conflict, disconnection and resolution, reaching a difficult solution, life changes, divorce, neurodivergence within the relationship, or who are experiencing a crisis, whether that be infidelity, loss of trust, trauma or grief.
Some couples may need to be seen individually at the beginning of the therapeutic process to address any personal and problematic behaviours or thoughts which are interfering with the relationship.
My Approach
I work by exploring and analysing the client’s or couples present, past and future. I believe no size fits all and not one therapeutic approach works for everybody, therefore I integrate with several approaches to therapy, depending on the client’s or couple’s needs at the time. After analysing what has brought you to therapy during a thorough assessment, I develop a treatment plan and then integrate with the following approaches:
Person Centred Therapy (this is a humanistic, non-directive approach, it allows each client/and or couple to lead the session and hear your thoughts back to yourself through my careful and observational reflections, picking up on any unhelpful subconscious thoughts).
Psychodynamic Therapy (when the time feels right we can safely explore the past and any adverse or negative experiences which may have occurred. We can explore the dynamics and patterns of past relationships and events which may have shaped your psyche. Processing the past through exploration can powerfully unlock subconscious links to problematic thoughts, feelings and behaviours that keep arising in the present).
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (rapidly helps you to address irrational beliefs, phobias, inaction, anxiety, critical thoughts, triggers, and negative, automatic and unhelpful thinking patterns, which are blocking you from becoming the best version of yourself and living a more enjoyable life. Before CBT intervention, it is important to understand and make sense of how past negative experiences contribute to feeling ‘triggered’ in the present. We will discuss goals to achieve from the therapeutic work in order to maintain the focus - ensuring your needs are met).
Other areas of work include:
Somatic Therapy (this experiential therapy draws upon the polyvagal theory, and helps calm the nervous system which can support reducing or preventing stress arousal - fight flight, freeze and fawn, a trauma response, PTSD, anger, fear and anxiety. Through this therapy I will conduct a guided relaxation technique which in turn has the potential to create new neural paths, supporting the development of new ‘safe’ muscle memories within the mind and body - widening your window of tolerance to stress),
Gestalt and Transactional Analysis Therapy (understanding patterns within relationships, the ‘empty chair technique’, and noticing the dialogue and roles one regresses to during dysfunctional relationships),
Jungian Psychoanalysis (analysis of the root of thoughts and feelings, dreams, symbols, and visualising future goals),
Psychosynthesis (working with the energy and spirit of the individual),
Life Coaching (Motivational Interviewing techniques can unblock cognitive dissonance - empowering and inspiring clients to live out their true potential).
Number of Appointments Recommended
Through my experience, I have found a change in mindset can be noticed after 6 - 12 weeks of therapy. Each problematic area generally needs 4 weeks worth of therapy.
