About me

Please note that you can book and pay on my website: Megan Clarke Counselling

I work evenings only.

Hi, my name is Megan, and I am a Pluralistic BACP registered counsellor. I have a Master of Science (MSc) in Counselling and Psychotherapy from the University of Keele.

I work wholly online as I have found it to be a more effective way to counsel clients as they find it easier to open up and fit their counselling around their busy home life.

I use a pluralistic approach to counselling. What this means is that I believe that each client and their needs are unique and that they deserve to have a choice in how their therapy sessions are conducted. This means that each client gets a bespoke and flexible experience.

A few examples of questions that I will ask you are:

Do you want me to ask you questions?
Do you want me to challenge you?
Would you like to set some goals for your therapy?
Would you like to focus on the past or the present?

If you aren’t sure what you would like at the start, that’s not a problem, as we can work this out together. As your sessions progress, you will have the option to tailor them so we focus on what works for you.

I also believe in the power of psychoeducation. What this means is that if you would like me to, I will explain some of the counselling theory around what you are experiencing. Again, the choice is yours, but my experience is that many clients find this empowering and are able to take these lessons forward into their everyday lives.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

My specialist areas are:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Bereavement
  • Over eating & binge eating
  • Chronic pain & fatigue syndromes (I have fibromyalgia as well as other conditions.)
  • Narcissistic personality disorder.

I have recently completed an advanced course on bereavement with Dr John Wilson, one of the country's leading experts on bereavement.

I completed my master's dissertation (18,000 words) on the topic of body image and the role of overeating and binge eating in this.

Completing this piece of work has given me an insight into the role that the chemicals in our food as well as society's expectations of 'beauty', what is an 'acceptable weight' and the role that they play in body image. Having suffered from body issues myself, I have a deep personal interest in this area of counselling and would like to complete some further study into this.

As a long time chronic pain and fatigue suffered myself, I feel that I have first-hand knowledge of the challenges that chronic pain and fatigue sufferers face. In my opinion, there's nothing quite like speaking to somebody 'who gets it' on a personal level.
