About me

Hi, I’m Matt, I am available for face to face sessions in Brighton and Hove and also work online and via telephone.

Experiencing difficult feelings and struggling emotionally at times is a natural part of life. I can help with this. The problems may not go away but I can help make them feel smaller and lighter by helping you explore them at a pace you are comfortable with. I am always non-judgmental and will be in your corner - seeing things from your perspective as far as possible.

I offer an initial online consultation (usually about 20 minutes) at no charge via Google Meets to give you a chance to ask any questions you may, and to allow us to get to know eachother a little.

I have wide experience working with low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, work related stress and family issues. Other problems I have successfully worked with include self-harm and suicidal thoughts, domestic violence, trauma and disordered eating.

The main thing I am trying to do is to help you understand things a little better. I do this by helping you to think differently, and at times challenging your existing behaviours, beliefs and perceptions.

I have successfully worked with clients on issues around anxiety, self-worth and not feeling good enough. I did this by helping my clients to both explore difficult feelings, and to see perceived failures and weaknesses as examples of resilience and achievements.

I have worked with young men in particular on issues around anger and substance misuse. I helped my clients get in touch with their feelings and manage them in a different way.

I have worked with trauma with different clients by helping them see how the trauma effects them now, and also guiding them through past incidents and previously buried feelings that have been triggered.

I have helped clients through work related issues and family problems by being in their corner and helping them see their feelings are absolutely valid. I can also help to change patterns of behaviour and have worked a lot with clients on boundaries.

I believe everyone experiences the world uniquely and everything is valid. Issues around race, LGBTQ and discrimination are particularly important to me.

Training, qualifications & experience

Training and Experience

I qualified from the University of Brighton with a Merit in Humanistic Psychotherapeutic Counselling. I also have an Advanced Level 5 Qualification in working with Children and Young people - if issues that relate to childhood and adolescence come up, my understanding of this period may be beneficial.

I have previously worked for a South London based Counselling Agency, the NHS under Wandsworth borough, and Catch 22, a charitable organisation also based in South London.

I have a CPCAB qualification in Substance Misuse which is an area of interest for me.

Issues related to race, LGBTQ, identity, and discrimination are particularly important to me.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.
