About me
Hi there and welcome, my name is Matt.
Based in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, I am an experienced counsellor and psychotherapist working face-to-face and online (for those who prefer it, are not local, or are abroad). I have a history of effectively working with many issues including addiction, depression, anxiety, relationship problems, low self-esteem, anger, bereavement, trauma, and more.
How I Work
I am a fully qualified integrative counsellor and psychotherapist, meaning that I draw on a range of therapeutic approaches (person-centred, psychodynamic, Jungian, relational, and Buddhism-informed) to suit your needs and unique situation.
Integrative counselling is a holistic, flexible approach to therapy that looks at the whole person, considering your mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional needs. The client-counsellor relationship is key to successful therapy. Therapy can be challenging. Hence, I aim to build a trusting and non-judgmental relationship that helps you feel comfortable, safe, and secure. In this setting, you can explore and come to understand your life history, behaviours, difficulties, concerns, or triggers. From this, you can begin to heal, make positive adjustments and set goals to improve your health, happiness, relationships, and satisfaction with life.
I can also provide practical coping strategies and tools that help you manage life and to achieve your goals. Please do not hesitate to get in touch to book a free phone or video consultation, or ask any questions.
I am a fully insured and a supervised, registered member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) and adhere to their ethical framework to ensure good practice. I am committed to upholding high levels of personal and professional moral qualities.
I work with 18+ adults and have experience working with addiction, abuse, affairs and betrayal, anger, anxiety, bereavement and loss (recent and past), childhood issues, depression, dissociation, family issues, feeling sad, gender and identity issues, jealousy, loneliness and isolation, low self-confidence, low self-esteem, avoidance and procrastination, mental health and physical health issues, maternal issues (esp. abortion, ambivalence, miscarriage, post-natal depression), men’s issues (incl. toxic masculinity, male post-natal depression, sexual dysfunction), parentification, relationships, trauma (incl. PTSD and CPTSD), separation and divorce, sex and sexuality issues, stress, work and career worries and issues, women’s issues.
I have a background in academia, and I completed my doctorate in English Literature and Psychoanalysis at the University of Birmingham in 2016. I am a published author and write regularly on psychoanalysis and counselling and psychotherapeutic theory and practice.
Note: The use of the title Dr in this directory listing relates to my doctorate qualification. However, this does not imply a general medical qualification.

Member organisations

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
