About me

Something has brought you here. It might be a specific crisis, or a pattern you can't seem to break. It might be a low mood that won't shift, a relationship that's run into difficulty, or simply a quiet sense that things aren't right, without being able to say exactly why. Any of those is a good enough reason to reach out.

I'm Martyn Kyle, a counsellor based in Ledbury, Herefordshire. I offer confidential, integrative counselling for adults, working from my private practice in Ledbury and online.

Counselling with me isn't about being given answers or told what to do. It's about having real, unhurried space to hear yourself think and to say the things you haven't been able to say elsewhere, and begin to understand what's actually going on. That understanding, in itself, tends to change things. The direction comes from you. I'll listen carefully, ask honest questions, and work alongside you for as long as that's useful.

I draw on a range of therapeutic frameworks, not as a set of techniques to apply in turn, but because different ways of understanding human experience genuinely shed light on different things. My core training is person-centred, and everything I do is rooted in that foundation: a genuine belief that you are the expert on your own life. I also draw on approaches that help with how we relate to our inner world, how past experiences shape present responses, and how we can build more flexibility in the face of difficult thoughts and feelings. How we work will depend on who you are and what you bring.

Alongside my private practice, I work within Ledbury Health Partnership through LEAF, a local charity, both as a counsellor and in a brief support role. This means I work across a wide range of human difficulties and levels of need, and I bring that breadth into my private practice.

I work with adults on a short-term or open-ended basis. Sessions are 50 minutes and available in person at my Ledbury practice or online. A free initial conversation is available before any commitment to sessions, just a chance to talk briefly about what's brought you here and whether working together feels right.

Training, qualifications & experience

I hold a Foundation Degree in Counselling (FdSc) from the University of Worcester, awarded following a rigorous, science-based programme. I am a Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP, Reg. No. 419468) and work within the BACP Ethical Framework.

My training and practice draw on a range of therapeutic frameworks - person-centred at the core, with additional training in Internal Family Systems (IFS), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), trauma-informed practice informed by polyvagal research, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). I bring these together as an integrated way of working rather than as a toolkit of techniques.

I also work within Ledbury Health Partnership through LEAF, a local charity, as a GP-referred counsellor and in a brief Listening and Guidance role.

Prior to retraining as a counsellor, I spent over 30 years in corporate leadership and business, including significant responsibility for supporting people through professional and personal challenges. That background continues to inform the depth and range of experience I bring to the work.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Additional information

I hold a small number of reduced-rate places for people experiencing genuine financial difficulty - please mention this when you get in touch, and we can discuss it.

Further information

I offer sessions both in person and online, with evening appointments available. In-person sessions take place at my home study in Ledbury - a quiet, private space that feels quite different from a clinical setting.

I work with adults on a short-term or open-ended basis, depending on what you bring and what we agree on together. A free initial conversation (by phone or email) is available before any commitment to sessions.

I have engaged seriously with ADHD and neurodiversity through dedicated training and direct client experience, and am comfortable working with clients for whom their faith or spiritual life is an important part of who they are.
