About me

I’m Maithili (pronounced “mightily”), a BACP-registered psychodynamic psychotherapist offering therapy in London (Harley Street, Mayfair and The City), across West Surrey (Farnham, Guildford, Godalming and Haslemere), and online.

Psychodynamic therapy focuses on how past experiences and early relationships can shape how we feel, behave and relate to others in the present. Alongside this, I draw on a range of evidence-based approaches, allowing us to explore your thoughts and emotional experiences from different perspectives and to find ways of working that feel supportive and meaningful for you.

I work with people seeking support for anxiety, depression anger and trauma, and to navigating significant life transitions, paying close attention to how, culture and lived experience shape their emotional life. and sense of identity. Within this, I have substantial experience working with abuse, self-harm, disordered eating and low self-esteem alongside complex and intergenerational trauma. My work supports greater self-understanding and helps rebuild a sense of emotional safety, continuity and connection.

I specialise in working with issues of gender identity and sexuality, race and culture and with clients from marginalised or minoritised communities, where experiences of difference, exclusion, or belonging often intersect with trauma, shame, and anxiety. These areas form a central and ongoing part of my clinical practice and inform my academic writing and research. Reflecting this focus, I am a registered member of BAATN and Pink Therapy.

My work is grounded in careful attention to how people come to understand themselves, their histories and their relationships, particularly where experiences of harm, shame, or disconnection have shaped emotional life. I work with clients across a wide range of ages and life stages, including diverse genders, sexualities, neurotypes, disabilities, racial and cultural backgrounds, and relationship preferences.

My way of working is collaborative and relational, shaped around your individual needs and at a pace that feels right for you. I aim to offer a warm, steady, and down-to-earth space where you can speak openly, feel understood, and gently make sense of whatever you’re facing.

Therapy with me is a space to find meaning in your experiences, to reconnect with yourself and others and to move towards a life that feels more authentic, grounded and alive.

Training, qualifications & experience

BMedSc

MSc Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy

My work is shaped by extensive experience supporting clients around gender identity and sexuality, alongside working with minority and marginalised communities and those affected by anxiety, trauma and abuse. Reflecting this focus, I am a member of BAATN and Pink Therapy.

In addition to psychotherapy work, I’m also an artist and this shapes how I listen and work therapeutically. My commissions are centred on capturing distinct emotional stories, lived experiences and uniqueness. This has strengthened my ability to honour individuality and notice what sits beneath someone’s words. In therapy, this translates into a way of working that is co-creative, responsive and tailored to you - helping you explore and express feelings or experiences that may be hidden, muted or difficult to name, in a way that feels safe for you.

Before training as a therapist, I spent 20 years working in psychology within the corporate sector. During this time, I became deeply interested in gendered mental health and the stigma surrounding vulnerability, emotional expression and help-seeking, particularly within high-pressure and performance-driven environments. This work sharpened my understanding of how cultural expectations around gendered roles, success and resilience inform emotional life, insights that continue to inform my therapeutic practice today.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

A central thread in my work is an attentiveness to how identity, including gender and sexuality, shapes emotional experience, alongside supporting clients who have lived with marginalisation, anxiety, trauma and abuse. These areas form a significant and ongoing part of my clinical practice, academic writing and research, I reserve a limited number of low-cost sessions as part of my commitment to widening access for clients affected by such experiences.

Further information

Life often brings us to turning points that hold both fear and possibility, along with a sense of loss and the potential for growth. I understand that seeking therapy at such moments can feel daunting.

I aim to offer a containing, supportive space where we can explore whatever feels important to you at a pace that feels right, to grieve, to make sense of what feels difficult and to move towards greater clarity, balance and a deeper sense of self.
