About me

I am an integrative counsellor, which means that I draw upon different types of therapy in order to tailor my approach to your individual and ongoing needs. I take my lead from you, as I believe that you are the expert on yourself. Together, we will explore whatever part of your journey you’re on; I’d like to help you discover more choices in how you respond to situations and more movement in places you might feel stuck. I have witnessed and been exposed to many traumatic and stressful situations. I am aware of the stress, anxiety and all the associated emotions that can create difficulty in our lives when we don’t, or can’t, acknowledge our feelings – both to others and, more importantly, to ourselves. Effective therapy requires that the counsellor exhibits respect, authenticity, empathy and acceptance. I work very hard to cultivate and nurture a loving and empathic stance with my clients. It is my hope that the acceptance and positive regard the client feels through our work will eventually become internalized and they will begin to feel more accepting and positive toward themselves.

Training, qualifications & experience

Qualifications:

I have an Advanced Diploma and a Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Integrative Counselling. I am trained in the fields of psychodynamic therapy, cognitive-behavioural therapy and humanistic therapy. I keep my knowledge and skills updated by regularly attending workshops, courses and conferences; recent training includes the following: grief counselling, working creatively, body awareness, working with diversity, trauma and addiction. In addition to my counselling qualifications, I have a Law Degree, Post Graduate Teaching Certificate, Masters Degree in Education and National Professional Qualification in Headship. I am a member of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP).

Experience:

I trained as a psychotherapeutic counsellor after an extensive career in teaching and school leadership. I have worked as a volunteer for The Samaritans and Citizens Advice Bureau. For the past two and a half years, I have worked for 4Cs (Centres For Christian Care and Counselling) and Off The Record. I am experienced in working with clients who have found themselves dealing with a range of issues including depression, anxiety, relationship problems, grief, addiction, sex abuse, emotional abuse and trauma. My experience also includes working with neuro-diverse clients and people with intersecting social identities which have led them to experience oppression, domination and/or discrimination.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
