Unhealthy relationships, anxiety, abuse and self-esteem

About me

Are you in a relationship or have been in one that is confusing? Your partner, parent or friend says one thing but then behaves in a completely different way. You find yourself working hard to keep them happy. You know what pleases them, what makes them sad and what makes them angry. Yet you no longer know that about yourself. Being in an unhealthy relationship can be very lonely but it can also have a lasting impact on how you see yourself and your mental health.

If this sounds familiar, you aren’t alone. I work with people who are in or have been in unhealthy relationships to help them understand them, develop their own self-awareness, and rediscover themselves. Through no fault of their own they have suffered from damaging relationships with parents or intimate partners. In our work we can make sense of what has happened to you and find a way forward for you to find you again. We can explore why you felt responsible for the feelings of others through co-dependency or how that might have been created through manipulation. We might look at the subtleties of coercive control, how you entered the relationship as one person and came out as another, living and feeling entirely different. We can do this while finding approaches to suit you to help manage anxiety or alleviate depression or low self-esteem. I hope that by working together you can see the blame and the shame for what they are and start rediscovering who you are.

I realise it’s hard to contact someone you don’t know, let alone share your deepest thoughts and feelings, so here’s a little about me. I decided to retrain as a counsellor in my late 40’s so I bring (a lot) of life experience into my practice. I have been on my own therapy journey, so I know how hard taking the first steps are. I won’t have all the answers, but I believe that inside you, you will. I aim to create an open and equal space where you can be yourself and voice your own opinions, including when I haven’t quite hit the mark! I have empathy and compassion in buckets, and I welcome any emotion in the counselling room, I want you to bring them all. I offer a genuine, honest, and non-judgemental approach and I understand that feeling of rationally knowing this isn’t your fault but still feeling it in other ways.

I know that when you have experienced an unhealthy relationship it can feel like its all your fault, which makes asking for help even harder. If any of this sounds familiar, it is ok to contact me and ask any questions you might have without any obligation at all. I’m always happy to help if you aren’t sure what you need.

As a counsellor I also work with people suffering loss. Unhealthy relationships can result in bereavement and grief but also loss in many other shapes, from a lost childhood to self-esteem and wellbeing, to a loss of self-worth, freedom, and a sense of future. I want to help people carrying pain find ways to heal, discover their joy again and live happier lives.

A believe you and not to judge.

To work in partnership and always with your consent.

Sessions decided by you – open ended or short term.

I know this is a big decision, so take your time. I’m here and ready to talk when you are.

Experience

I’m integrative counsellor, which means I can draw on a range of approaches tailored to my clients. I have experience and training working with people who have suffered domestic abuse, rape, and sexual assault. My aim is to offer a warm, supportive, and safe space for my clients to explore their feelings at their pace.

I work with anxiety, helping people to understand the root causes of their feelings and with those suffering from low self-esteem who never feel good enough (they are). I work with people mired in loss who are struggling to understand why they feel like they do and those suffering from depression. I have experience helping people to understand their trauma, naming it, and understanding the impact that its having on them. I sit with people to help ease and understand their loneliness. I support people through painful life changes, from divorce to infertility to illness. I also help clients experiencing stress and burnout, offering respite, and finding ways forward. My experience has taught me the healing potential of a counselling relationship based on mutual respect and care.
