About me

Hi, I’m Johanna, a counsellor working with adults, children and young people. Offering counselling in-person, online, by phone, or as walk and talk therapy, I’ll work with you to build a trusting relationship in which you feel supported and heard.

As an integrative counsellor, I draw on different approaches, theories and techniques, working in a way that best suits you.   I am warm, accepting and down-to-earth, with a spirit of curiosity and a sense of humour.

I will offer you a confidential, non-judgemental space, supporting you in exploring your thoughts and feelings and experiences.

I offer face-to-face counselling sessions in the lovely West Sussex town of Steyning. I also offer counselling online and by phone.

Using creative materials in your therapy can be a great way of communicating thoughts and feelings that are difficult to put into words, or of finding new ways of looking at something.  You might try creative approaches such as drawing, working with clay, or sand tray therapy.

I offer walk and talk therapy for adults, working in and with nature, experiencing the Sussex countryside and coast (around Steyning and Worthing).

Children and Young People
I recognise the importance of play as the language children* use to communicate their thoughts, feelings and experiences. Children and young people might choose to use toys or figurines, to draw, or use materials such as clay or Play-Doh.
*play is not exclusively for children. As an adult, if you are drawn to any toys or games in the counselling room, help yourself!

Working with Neurodivergence
I offer a neurodiversity-affirming approach to counselling that recognises and respects the many ways people think, feel, communicate, and experience the world.  My work is grounded in curiosity, collaboration, and a commitment to creating a space where you can be fully yourself.  I work with autistic people, ADHDers, and others who identify as neurodivergent, whether formally diagnosed, self-identified, or exploring what neurodivergence might mean for them.

I am committed to making reasonable adjustments to support your sensory, communication, and processing needs.  This can include:
adjusting lighting levels; minimising background noise or sensory distractions; providing fidget toys; flexibility around pacing, silence, eye contact, and modes of communication.  We can discuss what helps you feel most comfortable and regulated, and we can revisit this at any point.

My work is underpinned by the BACP's Ethical Framework, ensuring I practise safely, ethically and to high professional standards. I am fully insured and hold an enhanced DBS certificate.

Training, qualifications & experience

As well as my private counselling practice, I have worked in voluntary organisations, bereavement support, in schools and alternative provision.

I have experience working with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), including autism, speech and language difficulties and ADHD.   I will work with you to understand your specific needs and requirements in counselling.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
