About me

Hello, I'm Jo and welcome to my counselling page.

Experiencing distressing events within our workplace, home or relationships can sometimes be very difficult to cope with and may lead to feeling stuck, confused, anxious or depressed. At times like these it can feel overwhelming and it might seem impossible to independently move forward in life and find resolve.

Therapy can help develop ways of coping and working through these difficulties to find the answers. This support can enable a deeper understanding of why we do or feel things, increase self esteem and confidence and ultimately improve relationships.

I am an experienced BACP senior accredited therapist specialising in both traditional talking and EMDR therapy, and my practice offers a safe, confidential, non- judgmental space for you to discuss what is troubling you. Together, we can recognise and make sense of the problems you are experiencing and explore the choices needed to overcome these difficulties positively and confidently.

I look forward to meeting you.

EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing

This is one type of therapy I provide, designed specifically to alleviate trauma, PTSD and related symptoms such as acute anxiety or phobias.

Sometimes old disturbing memories can be stored in the brain in isolation and they get locked into the nervous system with the original images, sounds, thoughts and feelings. The old distressing material just keeps being triggered over and over again which prevents healing from taking place. In another part of your brain, you already have most of the information you need to resolve this problem but the two just cannot connect. This is where EMDR can help, allowing new information to come to mind and resolve the old problems - similar to what happens spontaneously in REM or dream sleep.

Training, qualifications & experience

I hold a First Class BA (Hons) in Counselling and Psychotherapy, an MSc in EMDR therapy and an HNDip. in Psychodynamic Counselling. I am a registered, Senior Accredited member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists and also a fully qualified EMDR Practitioner and Consultant in training, accredited by EMDR Europe.

I have previously lectured in Psychotherapy at NESCOT and Guildford Colleges and was recently a keynote speaker on Narcissism and Trauma at a Narcissistic Abuse Conference in London.

I work with a broad range of issues such as PTSD, CPTSD, Complex Trauma, Depression, Anxiety, Attachment disorders, Abuse, Narcissistic abuse, Anger issues, relationship difficulties, bereavement and coping with Separation and Divorce.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
