About me
As an Attachment Psychotherapist with lived experience of two sides of the adoption triad, I offer compassionate and informed psychotherapy to adult adoptees, adoptive parents and birth parents, to help explore the complex emotional landscape of adoption and care experience.
I believe people seek adoption therapy for many different reasons and at different stages of life. You may be struggling with questions around identity, belonging, self-worth, or be experiencing feelings of loss, rejection, abandonment, grief, shame, anger or confusion, all of which can often surface unexpectedly.
For many people impacted by adoption, experiencing a significant life event (such as a bereavement, marriage, becoming a parent themselves or a divorce) can awaken complex emotions. You may find yourself repeating patterns that are difficult to understand, navigating complicated family dynamics or carrying feelings that have never been fully acknowledged or explored - or have tried and had them dismissed or ignored. You may be considering a search for birth relatives.
For adoptive parents, you may have questions around whether to adopt again, concerns around attachment, behavioural challenges, identity development, contact arrangements and understanding the impact of early trauma on your child; as a Birth parent or relative you may be seeking support in processing loss, grief, reunion experiences, shame or the lifelong impact of separation.
My approach as a therapist is to create a warm, non-judgemental space tailored to individual need; together we explore your experiences at a pace that feels right for you.
Training, qualifications & experience
Over the last 20 years I have worked for several local and national charities (including mental health and an LGBTQ+ charity) and in higher education. I have recently worked part time as an Advocacy Worker, supporting children and young people who are or have been living in either residential or foster care.
Having completed my initial counselling training, have undertaken additional training in adoption counselling, attachment psychotherapy, trauma and CPTSD.
Please note that I do not provide 'intermediary' adoption related services such as tracing birth relatives or obtaining records; in addition, I cannot offer advice/support to any family member relating to legal matters regarding adoption.
Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
