About me

Hi, I'm Jacqui I'm a person-centred counsellor based in Folkestone and currently offering counselling online.

I work with people experiencing anxiety, low mood, difficulties in relationships or struggling with aspects of their lives, past or present. This might include experiences of trauma, feeling overwhelmed, or finding that things from the past continue to affect how you feel about yourself and others.

In our work together, we might explore different aspects of your experiences, depending on what feels important to you.

Making sense of your feelings - sometimes we can understand something intellectually but still struggle with how it feels. There may be emotions that are difficult to name, experiences that are hard to put into words, or things you've not had the opportunity to talk about openly. Counselling gives us time to explore these feelings without pressure or judgement.

Understanding your body and nervous system - anxiety, stress and trauma can affect us physically as well as emotionally. We can explore how these experiences show up in your body and nervous system, and look at simple techniques that may help you manage feelings of anxiety or overwhelm.

Exploring past experiences - our earlier experiences can influence how we see ourselves, how we relate to others and how we respond to situations in the present. Sometimes the ways we learned to cope or protect ourselves in the past continue to affect us. Counselling can help us explore these patterns and understand them in the context of your life.

Finding your own way forward - as you develop a better understanding of yourself, you may begin to recognise your needs, what matters to you and what you would like to change. My role isn't to make decisions for you or tell you how to live your life, but to support you in exploring your options and finding what feels right for you.

My approach is person-centred, which means I place importance on the relationship we build and on understanding your experience from your point of view. I aim to offer a space where you can speak openly without judgement or feeling that you need to fit someone else's expectations.

I take a trauma-informed and neuro-affirming approach, recognising that people experience and respond to the world in different ways. I'm interested in understanding you as an individual, rather than making assumptions about what you need or how you should be.

If you're considering counselling and would like to ask me any questions, you're welcome to get in touch.

Training, qualifications & experience

I hold a Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and am trained in the person-centred approach. I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

I take a trauma-informed and neuro-affirming approach to my work and have undertaken additional training in both areas. I recognise that our experiences shape us in different ways and that each person's needs and experiences are individual. I aim to understand you as a person, without making assumptions about your experiences or expecting you to fit a particular way of thinking, feeling or being.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

I offer a no-pressure, free 20-minute phone consultation before we begin working together. This is an opportunity for us to get to know each other a little, talk about what has brought you to counselling and discuss any questions you might have. It also gives you a chance to get a sense of me and how I work, and for us both to consider whether I might be the right counsellor for you.

Our first session will give us more time to explore what's been happening in your life, what you would like help with and what you hope to get from counselling. There is no expectation that you will have everything worked out beforehand. We can take our time getting to know each other and deciding what feels important to focus on.
