About me
Do you need help dealing with stress?
Are things getting on top of you, so that your day to day living is a struggle, and your relationships with others are strained?
Do you feel like past, or current, events are effecting how you cope with life today?
I help people feel more confident in their relationships by identifying the hurdles that are holding them back.
I help people to find peace of mind by managing their anxiety or low mood. I support people through their bereavement to enable them to enjoy life again. Let me help you to make sense of your difficulties so that you can connect more positively with your loved ones and the world.
I offer an opportunity for you to explore your concerns in a caring, confidential and trusting atmosphere in my quiet, discreet consulting room in a village near Boroughbridge (following health and social distancing guidelines); alternatively I offer sessions by phone or virtual face to face.
I am committed to working with the individual and their specific needs and offer a relationship based on empathy, non-judgement and honesty. I have extensive experience (both short and long-term) of working with clients with a wide range of issues.
I can help you to find ways to manage the effects of strain on your brain and your body. We can work together on developing your resources to get through stress, trauma, anxiety and/or depression. You do not have to face this situation alone.
Training, qualifications & experience
Grad Dip in Counselling (2010); Cert in Counselling (2008)
As well as working with adult clients in private counselling practice, I also provide counselling for clients referred through Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs - mainly BUPA and Spectrum Life) and staff at NHS York and Scarborough Trust. I have also worked as a volunteer counsellor for ten years at Talking Spaces Counselling Service and Just B, a bereavement service in Harrogate. Previous to counselling I was a Registered Mental Health Nurse, and so have a strong background in working with mental health issues.

Areas of counselling I deal with
Other areas of counselling I deal with
My practice is trauma informed - I have extensive training and experience in using somatic, sensorimotor and focussing techniques; I also use internal family systems as adapted by the TIST model (healing the fragmented parts of self), which has a strong base in attachment theory (developed by Janina Fisher).
We have all suffered some sort of trauma - I offer you an approach that focuses on soothing the trauma, and helping you access the compassionate, creative nurturing adult part of you to help overcome the internal self-alienation from your younger fearful parts.

Further information
I offer a robust, adventurous practice influenced by trust in my instinct and experience.
I provide a non-defensive practice based in an attitude of openness, generosity, negotiation, spontaneity and relational availability and a recognition and acceptance of appropriate risk. I believe this offers richness, depth and potential for change as well as a more respectful way of relating.
