About me

We can spend years learning how to cope, how to keep going, how to be who we think we’re supposed to be. We become accustomed to certain ways of thinking, feeling and relating, often without questioning where they came from or whether they still serve us.

I’m Emma, an integrative therapist and qualified clinical supervisor, and a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP). I believe there’s something profoundly important about being met with understanding, particularly at times when we struggle to understand ourselves or navigate difficult experiences.

My approach is relational and collaborative, grounded in compassion, curiosity and a genuine interest in understanding the person behind their experiences. I see the therapeutic relationship as the foundation of meaningful work. I recognise that allowing someone into the more vulnerable parts of our lives takes trust, and building that trust is something I place great importance on.

Sometimes we need somewhere to bring our pain, our uncertainty or the thoughts and feelings we’ve struggled to share with anyone else. Somewhere we don’t have to hold everything together, find the right words or make sense of it all straight away.

But therapy can also offer something beyond being heard.

I work collaboratively, bringing curiosity, reflection and, when appropriate, different perspectives into our conversations. I don’t believe therapy is about being told what to do or who we should become, nor is it simply about talking while someone listens.

The experiences we’ve had, the relationships we’ve known and the things we’ve come to believe about ourselves can all influence how we experience life today. Sometimes exploring those connections can help us understand familiar patterns, difficult emotions or the ways we relate to ourselves and others.

At other times, our work may be much more focused on the present. We might explore how you’re managing day-to-day life, navigating a difficult relationship, coping with loss or finding ways to respond to situations that feel overwhelming.

There is no single way that therapy should look or feel which is why I adapt my approach to the individual, recognising that what one person needs may be very different from another.

Through our work together, you may begin to develop a different understanding of yourself and your experiences, feel more confident in your decisions, recognise what you need from your relationships or discover new ways of responding to life’s difficulties.

I support adults experiencing a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties, including anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, identity and life transitions.

Grief and bereavement are also significant areas of my work. This includes the loss of someone we love, anticipatory grief, complicated feelings surrounding loss, and the many other ways grief can affect our lives.

Alongside ongoing counselling, I offer dedicated grief-focused sessions for those who would like more focused support around a particular loss or bereavement.

I offer individual counselling to adults aged 18 and over, with face-to-face appointments available in Plymouth and London, alongside online and telephone sessions throughout the UK.

Sessions are 60 minutes, and I offer both short-term and longer-term therapy depending on your needs.

You can find further information about my approach and services on my website.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
