About me

Hi, I'm Eleri.

I'm guessing that if you've come to this page there's something going on for you that is worrying you or preoccupying you - there's something that needs to change.

I run Black Dog Talking, a counselling service where I offer a safe and confidential space where people can explore whatever is troubling or pre-occupying them. Change is always possible, whether the change is in you or your circumstances ... or both.

You may be struggling with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem or confidence; or perhaps you're experiencing relationship difficulties, problems at work or school, or other personal challenges; the fact that you are reading this now means that now may be the right time for you to explore those feelings and to work out what it is that you want to change and how.

Talking "therapy" can bring long-term benefits.

What I offer is an opportunity for you to recognise and acknowledge difficult or uncomfortable feelings, and to work things out. Working together with a counsellor usually enables people to see themselves and their situation differently, from a different perspective. Often the process is like the unravelling of a mystery - working out what is going on for you and why.

I work largely in a person-centred/ integrative way. I offer short-term (6-8 weeks) and longer-term counselling. Sessions last 50 minutes.

It's important that you should have a counsellor you trust and feel comfortable with. It's also important that you should have a counsellor who is qualified to deal with whatever it is that has brought you to counselling. To allow you to decide whether you would like to come to Black Dog Talking, I offer an initial telephone or online chat lasting up to half an hour free of charge. If you're not yet ready for that, drop me a message with any questions you might have.

I work largely online but have some limited availability for face-to-face work from counselling rooms in Purley and Coulsdon.

“We cannot change, we cannot move away from what we are, until we thoroughly accept what we are. Then change seems to come about almost unnoticed.”
― Carl R. Rogers, On Becoming a Person

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

My aim is to make a positive difference to people’s lives.  In my work, that means being alongside clients and acting as a support, mirror and prompt as they work through their preoccupations and challenges.

I am here to try to understand what is happening for you and as you help me to understand you will begin to understand yourself and your situation better too.

I previously worked in central government and have experience of working with a wide range of clients, stakeholders and organisations.
