About me

Hi. I’m Clare and I am a qualified and fully insured counsellor and psychotherapist, accredited with the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP). I work with adults (16 and above) offering in-person sessions at The Plex, Wakefield, and online sessions via Zoom.

Life is full of challenges. At times, we need help to find a way through. You may need support during a difficult time such as following a bereavement or the end of a relationship. You may be feeling dissatisfaction in life but don’t know where to start to make things better. You could be feeling overwhelmed due to work, parenting and/or caring responsibilities. You may be finding something from the past, such as childhood abuse or neglect or elements of your upbringing are having an impact on you now. You may be feeling confused about experiences you find yourself repeating such as unsatisfactory relationships or reacting to others in certain ways. Whether you require short-term support or want to engage in longer-term work, I may be able to help.

We could work together to:

  • create a space for you to explore and better understand your situation
  • help find your purpose and re-balance your priorities
  • understand how patterns established in childhood may be affecting your life now
  • help you to develop self-compassion
  • work through the impact of past trauma

Training, qualifications & experience

I hold a Level 7 Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling & Psychotherapy from Leeds Beckett University where I achieved a distinction. Before training in counselling and psychotherapy I worked as an occupational therapist in the NHS. Before leaving the NHS I worked with Older Adults in Mental Health settings.

I have also taught on counselling and psychotherapy courses for the past 4 years (at Leeds Beckett University and Metanoia Institute).

I have additional experience and training in working with people who:

  • were abused (physical, emotional, sexual) or neglected as children
  • had parents with mental health difficulties/addictions
  • find becoming a parent triggers their own childhood trauma
  • are struggling following a loss such as a bereavement
  • have a relative living with dementia
have dementia or a learning disability

I have worked in private practice for six years. I have also worked as a counsellor for sexual violence services. I have also worked in bereavement services (Cruse Bereavement Care Leeds, Leeds Bereavement Forum) which included providing training to a range of organisations and training bereavement volunteers.

I have additional experience in working with people living with dementia and their supporters. This included working in the NHS with people living in care homes and in the community. I also have an MSc in Dementia Studies.

I'm currently completing a PhD exploring the experiences of people ages 65 and over who were sexually abused as children.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
