About me

There are many reasons why people come to therapy. It may be a major life crisis or a specific issue, or it may be that you are struggling with day-to-day life and would value someone to talk to and gain clarity. I understand that asking for help can be daunting; I also know that seeking help may be the first (big!) step to a happier future. I will work at your pace, and the work we do will be collaborative. I believe that the relationship between us (me, the counsellor and you, the client) is crucial to successful therapy, and I will strive to build a safe and trusting environment in which you feel able to open up.

I offer both counselling & psychotherapy as well as Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR). This is an effective psychotherapy technique which can help with troublesome memories that may be continuing to cause day-to-day distress.

In our initial telephone conversation, we would determine which type of therapy you may be best suited to, depending on the issues you wish to resolve and how you are affected day-to-day.

I work both in Wheldrake and the York centre. Online counselling is also an option; however, my preference is face-to-face as I enjoy building up a relationship, which I find is more effective in person. My counselling style is warm and friendly, yet professional. I will gently challenge you if needed and will regularly check to see if you are feeling the benefit of our work together.

Training, qualifications & experience

My Psychology degree was obtained at York St John University, and my post-graduate diploma in Counseling & Psychotherapy at Leeds Beckett University.

I am a member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP). I achieved Accredited status in 2023.

I am an EMDR practitioner, and my training and qualifications were obtained through the EMDR Academy. I am currently working towards becoming an Accredited EMDR practitioner.

I undertake regular additional training to keep my skills current and relevant, as well as develop my knowledge in different areas of psychology.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
