About me
Hi, and thank you for visiting my profile. You have made a huge and brave move towards investigating what's troubling you, just by being here.
I work with my dog, Ted, as Embark Exeter - Canine-Assisted Therapy, and you will find me warm, welcoming, informal, curious, non-judgmental and compassionate. Ted will be in the room and also help you to explore and discover with his reassuring presence. Find us on Facebook as Embark Exeter, or discover more by following this link: https://embarkexeter.co.uk.
I see my job as helping and working with you to "unpack" and explore your past, present and your future. I offer a safe, supportive and confidential environment where my clients feel comfortable exploring their thoughts and feelings, and where they can develop the skills and tools they need to thrive. I use honesty, impartiality and empathy as the main backbone of my practice - the core conditions of person-centred theory.
There are many unique challenges teens and adults face in today's world. From stress and anxiety, to depression and other mental health issues that can feel overwhelming and it can become difficult to connect with others, or even ourselves. My canine-assisted therapy programme offers a unique and effective approach to healing, encouraging emotional connection and personal growth. The calming presence of Ted combined with my specialist counselling at my therapy room in central Exeter will support you throughout complicated and challenging times in your life.
These are the roots from which natural healing and personal growth can begin, and continue, to flourish.
I have a wealth of lived experiences that have brought me to where I am today, and I am passionate about the empowerment, healing and personal growth that the counselling relationship can bring - both human and canine!
My approach to therapy is firmly rooted in empathy, compassion, honesty and acceptance, combined with a curious mind.
I have a particular interest in (but not limited to) the following subjects:
- Anxiety
- Abusive relationships
- Bereavement
- Boarding School Syndrome
- Depression
- Grief
- Shame
- Trauma
- Women's issues
I was part of a military family for nearly 30 years, and had 11 schools before I was 13, at which point I went to boarding school. I have lived in various countries, including Australia, Canada and Northern Ireland during the height of The Troubles, but have always called Exeter home. I am the mother of a teenage girl, and I have previously been married. I volunteer with Ted, for Pets As Therapy, and am constantly amazed by the power and healing presence of animals.
I recently adopted Charli, a chow chow previously used for breeding. She is the sweetest little soul, and is a natural at being a therapy dog! I am gradually introducing her in to my practice over the next few months.
