About me
Hi, I’m Angela McDonnell
I’m a reassuringly relaxed, ethical, and professional counsellor and trained counselling supervisor with over 15 years of experience.
People often tell me they feel at ease with me quite quickly. I work in a grounded, human way, taking the work seriously without making it feel heavy or intimidating. Alongside talking therapy, I may gently draw on creative and embodied approaches where it feels helpful. Therapy doesn’t need to be clinical or cold to be effective. Where appropriate, I also offer the option of working outdoors, using the natural environment as part of the therapeutic process.
My Therapy Style
I’m genuinely interested in you: how you tick, how you think, how you feel, and how it all fits together in your world. I want to understand things from your perspective, not squeeze you into a model or label.
I’ll listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions, and offer therapeutic insights along the way. Together - without pressure or expectation - we’ll explore what’s going on and open up new ways of seeing things.
I bring focused attention, acceptance, and a steady listening ear, so you can explore challenges safely and find your own “ahh-ha” moments, solutions, and shifts - at your own pace.
I work with an eye on the past, present, and future. That means we may look at how past experiences still show up for you today, while also staying grounded in what’s happening now - and keeping sight of the changes you want to invite in. For some, this might also include more creative or reflective ways of working, depending on what feels most natural for you.
Who I Work With
Clients usually come to me when something just isn’t sitting right anymore.
They might feel flat, fed up, unmotivated, stressed, or burnt out. Life can feel like hard work, whether that is at home, at work, in relationships, or internally. Many feel weighed down by past experiences or stuck in patterns they cannot seem to shift on their own.
Often there is a quiet sense of knowing that life could feel better than this, even if it is not yet clear how to get there.
I tend to work best with people who are:
- Navigating a new life stage
- Seeking healing from past or ongoing trauma
- Feeling disconnected from themselves or unsure of their direction
Does any of this sound like you
• Are you dissatisfied with life, work, or relationships?
• Feeling stressed or burnt out?
• Struggling to let go of the past, or overwhelmed by past events?
• Feeling flat, fed up, or unmotivated?
If so, you’re not alone. Many of my clients reach a point where they know something needs to change, even if they’re not sure what that looks like yet.
Are you ready to
- Move forward with more clarity, energy, and direction?
- Feel more confident in your choices and next steps?
- Reconnect with yourself and what really matters to you?
Therapy can be a space to pause, take stock, and gently start moving again - in a way that feels right for you.
Ways of Working Together
- In-person counselling in South Manchester, Chorlton-Cum-Hardy (M21)
Easily accessible by bus and tram, with nearby parking
Please note: the premises are not wheelchair accessible - Online wherever you are in the UK
- I also offer nature-based sessions in Chorlton for those who feel drawn to working outdoors in a more experiential way.
Taking the Next Step
I offer a free 30-minute initial chat, either in person, come along to my therapy space in Chorlton and I will make you a herbal tea, or online via Zoom.
For your reassurance, the initial chat is an informal meet and greet conversation. It is a chance for us to meet, talk a little about what is going on for you, and explore how I might be able to support you. I will also share more about how I work, so you can get a feel for whether it feels like a good fit.
There is no pressure and no obligation, just space to see whether working together feels right for you.
“You don’t have to have it all figured out to take the next step.”

Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
