About me

Coming to see a counsellor can be a daunting step.  In doing so it can be the start of the change, understanding, and self-insight you may be seeking.

I am Amanda, a qualified and experienced Integrative Counsellor.  As a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) I adhere to their Code of Ethics and Practice, so you know you will be in safe hands.

I offer a free initial conversation, lasting up to 20 minutes, which helps us to see if I am the right counsellor for you.

I have worked with individuals from a range of backgrounds who have experienced or are experiencing challenges that have a negative impact on them. This includes trauma, anxiety, depression, domestic abuse, addiction, low self-esteem, spirituality, parenting challenges (including neurodiversity), disability, illness, and unhealthy coping mechanisms.

Although change can seem impossible, change is possible.  Working together in a safe and confidential environment we would look at how that can happen.

Training, qualifications & experience

I use an integrative approach in counselling, which emphasises the importance of the therapeutic relationship. My practice is informed by a number of psychotherapeutic models/theories including Person Centred, Attachment, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and Systemic Approaches.  Do not worry if you are unsure about what all of that means, it means I know a number of different methods that could help you.

Before starting a private counselling practice I worked for a Domestic Abuse Service, counselling survivors of domestic abuse, and a Family Centre, counselling parents struggling with the challenges of family life.  I also previously worked for a charity running courses in high schools that help participants build positive mental wellbeing and life confidence, and for a charity that supports those seeking freedom from addiction.

Counselling Training:

  • BA (Hons) Counselling (Level 6), Middlesex University
  • Diploma of Higher Education in Counselling (Level 5), Middlesex University

Ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD), including:

  • Level 2 Understanding Children and Young People's mental health
  • Working with Adult Survivors of Domestic Violence and Abuse
  • Domestic Abuse and Intimate Partner Violence
  • Working with Trauma Triggers and Flashbacks
  • Working with Trauma Memories
  • Working Together to Safeguard Children

I have regular professional supervision that supports me in my counselling and therapeutic practice to the benefit of myself and my clients.

Before training to be a counsellor I worked in both corporate and charity sectors, so have an understanding of the pressures these environments can bring.  I have personal experience of some of life's challenges.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

If you choose to go ahead we then arrange an initial consultation for 50 minutes, which would be a fee paying session.  This would be more detailed, and also make sure that I am the right counsellor for your needs. If we agree to work together, we would then arrange a regular 50 minute appointment (in-person, online, or by phone).
