About me
My name is Alex (she/her) and I am a BACP Accredited Counsellor with 15 years of experience in practice. I love the work I do because I have witnessed how life-changing counselling can be. Though it’s not life-changing all the time, or for everyone, sometimes it’s a moment in the week for space and healing that you wouldn't otherwise get. These are the small moments that can make a difference.
The foundation of my approach is relational, meaning that I genuinely try to understand you, your concerns & what really matters to you, from your perspective. I work in collaboration with you, co-creating a space of mutual trust and safety. I have found this to be important so that when uncomfortable feelings such as shame, anger, fear arise they are welcomed and easier to explore together.
Whether you are seeking help with a particular difficulty or want to do some deep exploration, I will offer you my compassion, skills and experience as a counsellor in a confidential, non-judgemental space.
Training, qualifications & experience
Before I became a counsellor I started my career from a neuroscience research background, I loved the theory of neuroscience and continue to find it helpful in my work as a counsellor.
I trained as an ‘integrative’ counsellor (Masters from University of Manchester) and have built on this with a variety of training over the years. In practice this means that I call on a variety of skills and techniques to be able to offer you a flexible approach tailored to you. For example, I have a qualification in coaching (Institute of Leadership and Management) which can be helpful for people looking for a more focused approach to change in their personal or professional life.
I have worked extensively with people who have experienced sexual violence and I have many years experience working in higher education as a counsellor for students.
More recently I have been a lecturer in counselling at a university and I currently manage a perinatal counselling service in Edinburgh.
I also hold a PGdip in Clinical Supervision and specialise in supervision of short term work, and managers of counselling services.
Member organisations
school Registered / Accredited
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
