About me
Hello, I'm Dr Alex Thomas, a Counselling Psychologist registered with the HCPC, a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society, and a registered member of the BACP.
Reaching out for therapy can feel daunting. Many of the people I work with have spent a long time coping on their own, often appearing successful and capable on the surface, whilst privately struggling with anxiety, burnout, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, grief, addiction, trauma, or a sense that something in their life no longer feels sustainable.
Before becoming a psychologist, I had a successful career in the corporate sector. My own experience of navigating significant life challenges and engaging in therapy ultimately led me to retrain as a psychologist. The support I received during that time taught me the value of having a therapist who can offer both compassion and challenge, and this remains at the heart of how I work today.
I believe therapy works best when there is a genuine human connection. My style is warm, engaged, and collaborative. Clients often tell me they appreciate having a therapist who is approachable, thoughtful, and willing to explore difficult subjects with honesty, curiosity, and compassion. Together, we can work to understand not only what is causing distress in the present but also the deeper patterns that may be keeping you stuck.
I work with adults experiencing a broad range of difficulties, with particular experience in trauma, anxiety, OCD, burnout, addiction, relationship difficulties, and the psychological impact of living with long-term health conditions, including HIV. I also have extensive experience supporting LGBTQIA+ clients and working with issues relating to identity, gender, shame, minority stress, and chemsex.
My approach is integrative and tailored to the individual. I draw on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), psychodynamic approaches, and existential therapy. This allows me to adapt therapy to your needs, whether you are looking for practical strategies to manage symptoms, deeper insight into longstanding patterns, or a combination of both.
Above all, I aim to provide a space where you feel safe to speak openly, explore what matters most to you, and work towards meaningful and lasting change. Therapy can be challenging at times, but you do not have to navigate it alone.
Training, qualifications & experience
I'm a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), a Chartered Member of the British Psychological Society (BPS), and a registered Counselling Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
