About me

Therapy is not always easy, and can at times, feel distressing. Your experiences may be something that you have shut away or tried to ignore. Unfortunately the feelings and thoughts around these experiences do not go away and can often become or feel out of our control. It is important to note that we do not need to visit anything that feels too scary for you, and we can still work around your experiences without directly re-visiting them. This can be re-traumatising and this is not something we need to do in order for the work to be successful. On the other side of this I have seen many people find healing and acceptance.

I work on a humanistic basis with people with different diagnosis. I work with the manifestations of their experiences that can shape the way they have become. I look at diagnosis as a response to trauma and that response being a survival mechanism. I also work with Autistic Spectrum Condition and people with Special Educational Needs.

I work openly and compassionately. I will never judge you and I will never tell you what to do. I will always work with you to find the safest and the best options for you. I am aware that every person's life is unique and I will strive to meet you in an open space where your life story can be explored.

Over the last 10 years of working as a therapist I have worked as an Art Psychotherapist/EMDR Therapist/Somatic Experiencing therapist in a number of different fields.

I worked with Refugees and Asylum Seekers, on a one to one and group basis. The main body of this work was working with people who have had to flee their countries largely due to persecution, torture and human trafficking.  This line of work saw me working very closely with very severe traumas. In this I ran men’s groups, women’s groups and mixed groups.

I worked in a specialist college in Sheffield, for young adults aged 16-21 who struggle in mainstream education. Either with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and/or behavioural needs.

I worked at the University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University and colleges and schools in lower socio-economic areas.

I have worked with a broad range of ages of children up to adults. Having this experience has helped me to see and understand trauma and its effects on those I work with from a greater perspective. Understanding all of the ages and stages of how trauma can affect us through life.

I also work one to one with adults, of all genders in my own private practice.

My work has seen me supporting those struggling with psychosis, personality disorders, sexual abuse, dissociation, domestic abuse, neglect, parents with alcohol and/or drug addictions, bereavement, bullying, neglect, OCD, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, sexual exploitation, health conditions, selective mutism, disease, young people in care and relationship issues. As well as ASC, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, and attachment conditions.

I have spent much of my career also training other organisations, schools, colleges and mental health organisations in how to work with trauma and how to work best with and recognise it in those they work with.

I was lead therapist in a mental health charity and I also work as a clinical supervisor supporting other therapists or mental health workers in their fields of work, such as SRASAC (Sheffield Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre). I also supervised trainees coming from the Masters Art Therapy, The Northern Programme, in Sheffield.

Further information

I am a multi-disciplinary therapist. I work in Psychotherapy and Art Psychotherapy using talking and creative approaches as a mode for expression and communication. I also use EMDR and Somatic experiencing for processing trauma in the body.

In my work I use a mixture of modalities for specific purposes. Talking therapy is amazing for learning about ourselves, for working out patterns of behaviours that may have developed due to trauma and survival growing up or in specific life circumstances or experiences. It gives those I work with the opportunity to build on safety in a supportive therapeutic relationship.

Art Psychotherapy accesses parts of the brain that talking therapy cannot. It can be a way to process our life circumstances through creativity, using our creative brain which is also connected to the part of our brain where memories are stored. In the act of creation we can literally process memories that we may have forgotten about or dissociated from. It also helps to have a third anchor in the therapy space where we are able to talk about ‘it’ the artwork, rather than ‘I,’ if it too difficult to speak about experiences directly.

EMDR and Somatic Experiencing Therapy are both trauma processing therapies which help us to work directly with the body and its responses, in order to help the traumas that can get trapped in our nervous system, to be processed.

This is why I believe strongly in a multidisciplinary approach, using a mixture of talking, using creative outlets (if that is something you feel drawn to) and working directly with the body through trauma processing techniques.
