About me
Experienced Psychotherapist specialising in Trauma, EMDR, Addiction & Executive Therapy
Are you struggling with the weight of past experiences, finding it difficult to cope with the pressures of success, or feeling stuck in old patterns that no longer serve you? I’m Dr Tom Barber, a UKCP-registered psychotherapist, EMDR practitioner, and bestselling author with over 30 years’ experience helping people make sense of their lives and move forward with clarity and confidence.
I specialise in working with trauma and PTSD, executive stress, addiction and recovery for professionals, and therapy for high-net-worth individuals. I also offer online therapy worldwide, supporting clients who need the flexibility of working across borders while maintaining the highest level of confidentiality and care.
Therapy with me is collaborative and compassionate, yet grounded in proven methods. I combine EMDR, trauma-informed approaches, and integrative psychotherapy to help you regain stability, restore meaning, and reconnect with who you truly are.
If you’re ready to take the next step, I’d be glad to hear from you. Please get in touch to arrange an initial consultation and explore how we might work together.
Training, qualifications & experience
Choosing the right therapist is an important decision. You want to know not only that your therapist is well qualified, but also that they bring the depth of experience needed to support you through the challenges you face.
I have dedicated more than 30 years to the practice and study of psychotherapy. My training has taken place at some of the most respected institutions in the UK, and my work has brought me into contact with people from all walks of life — from those navigating trauma and loss to senior leaders, professionals, and high-net-worth clients seeking clarity and transformation.
Academic Training
- Doctorate in Existential Psychotherapy and Counselling – New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling (NSPC) and Middlesex University.
- Master’s Degree in Integrative Psychotherapy and Counselling – Roehampton University, a leading centre for psychotherapeutic training.
I trained directly under Professor Emmy van Deurzen, one of the world’s foremost authorities on existential psychotherapy, gaining unique insights into the dilemmas and struggles of human existence.
Professional Development
Alongside my formal qualifications, I have undertaken extensive specialist training in:
- EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) for trauma and PTSD.
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
- Humanistic and Analytical approaches.
- Advanced trauma-informed practice.
This breadth allows me to work flexibly and integratively, adapting therapy to the individual rather than following a single method.
Experience
Over the course of my career I have:
- Worked with thousands of clients in the UK and internationally.
- Taught psychotherapy and counselling students worldwide.
- Written bestselling books and contributed to the professional field through academic research and journal reviews.
- Been featured in national media including BBC, Sky, The Times, The Guardian, and others.
My clinical work today focuses on trauma and PTSD, executive therapy, addiction and recovery for professionals, and therapy for high-net-worth individuals. I also see clients worldwide online, maintaining the same depth, discretion, and professional standards across all settings.
Registration and Professional Standards
- Registered with the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP).
- Holder of an enhanced DBS certificate.
- Recognised provider with BUPA, Aviva, Aetna Global Benefits, Vitality Health, and AXA PPP Healthcare.
Member organisations
school Registered / Accredited
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.
As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.
UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
