Are you suffering through intense or unhelpful emotions? Do they lead you to act in ways that make things worse? Distress tolerance skills based on DBT can help!

What are distress tolerance skills?

This five week workshop is part of our programme in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. Distress tolerance module is centred on accepting difficult situations and emotions and finding ways to survive and tolerate the moment without engaging in problematic behaviours such as self-harm, substance misuse and others.

What is Dialectical Behaviour Therapy?

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is the most researched treatment for individuals with extreme emotional sensitivity living with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). It is also effective for bipolar disorder, depression, eating disorders, substance abuse and post-traumatic stress disorder. DBT is a modification of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and it applies a range of cognitive-behavioural strategies and mindfulness skills to the problems experienced by people living with emotion dysregulation. The skills taught are effective at helping people to manage their emotions, their behaviour, their relationships and their distress.

How will I learn?

New skills are presented each week and homework is assigned for participants to practice during the week. Homework is reviewed at the next group. The goal of the group is for people to gain new skills, get better at the skills they have and be able to use the skills when they are really needed, such as during times of intense emotion, crisis or conflict.

Who should join the group?

Traditionally, DBT skills group was designed to serve as a supplement to individual psychotherapy. We are offering places to people with a simultaneous involvement in individual therapy and to those who are only interested in learning the skills. Our groups might also be of help to people who attended DBT in the past and now want to refresh their knowledge of some of the modules without committing to the whole programme. Individuals interested in joining the programme will be assessed by a member of the Mind-Reframed team prior to joining. Alternatively, they can provide a letter of recommendation from their psychiatrist outlining their history and reasons for referral.

Format of the Group

This group meets weekly for two hours at the Barnsbury Centre in Islington. Nearest stations are Kings Cross, Caledonian Road or Caledonian Road and Barnsbury. Our groups are held on Saturday mornings between 10:30 and 12:30. The next five week group starts on 26th September 2015 and will focus on Distress Tolerance skills.

Fees

The fee is £80 per two hour weekly session and includes workbooks. Discounts are available for people who commit to each of the four modules. Deposit of £100 must be paid to reserve the place.
