Lisa Stevenson : Couples Therapist, EFT Practitioner, NCS and AAMET (Accred)
Healthy connections to others and to ourselves are vital to our wellbeing. Relationships are where we heal and grow and where we ultimately thrive.
I am a couples therapist working with people who may have lost hope in their relationship, got stuck in a destructive pattern of relating to each other, or just forgotten why they are together. Sometimes there are apparent incompatibilities or a specific distressing issue such as an affair. Anxiety around relationship issues can be exhausting.
Whatever the issue, we’ll unpack the dynamics of the relationship, without blame or criticism, in order to give the two of you choices that you may have lost sight of. We will look for safe ways of breaking down the layers of defensiveness we often build for self protection, in order for you to learn how to ‘lean in’ again.
People often find it harder to seek help as a couple than as individuals. Whether it be fear of failure, fear of being vulnerable in front of your partner, or simply fear of being 'unmasked', I aim to be sensitive and careful whilst being respectful of both partners whatever their story.
I do pre marriage counselling for those who are about to get married, or make a commitment, to facilitate healthy and conscious choices to create a shared vision. Too often, we leave things to chance and then feel disappointed when our dreams are unfulfilled.
I also work with individuals, whether it's about relationships, anxiety, stress, low self esteem, or any other difficulty. I use various techniques and tools to fit each individual and their particular difficulty. I draw on the benefits of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy which is based on self- awareness and creating choice through mindfulness.
And finally, I am an accredited EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) practitioner which I find is wonderfully adaptable to so many of the things we struggle with.
I work in Swindon at the Counselling and Psychotherapy Centre, and in Marlborough, and also on Skype.
Training, qualifications & experience
I have a Diploma in Clinical and Pastoral Counselling and am an accredited member of the National Counselling Society, a member of the National Council of Psychotherapists and an accredited practitioner with the Association for the Advancement of Meridian Energy Techniques.
Prior to moving to Wiltshire and setting up in private practice, I spent 10 years working in a busy and challenging cross cultural practice both with couples and with individuals. I have many years experience of working with people from varied cultural and religious backgrounds, and with cross cultural couples for whom such differences may impact their relationship.
I am an advanced Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) practitioner using it with individuals and with groups.
I have also delivered several workshops, especially on stress and anxiety management, relationships and EFT.
Since I have a natural curiosity and am constantly inspired by my work with couples, I take my professional development very seriously. I aim to increase my creativity and improve my practice through regular courses, reading and learning each year.
