iRest Yoga Nidra Meditation is a yoga therapy practice that involves being guided into the hypnogogic state (the healing state between sleep and wakefulness) through the stages of the practice and ending with grounding and integrating the experience into the waking state.

The practice enables an experience of deep relaxation and accesses deeper levels of the mind, to support healing and transformation.

Although it is yoga therapy, it is different from asana, the physical postures that people tend to think of when they think of yoga. iRest is commonly practised lying on the floor on a yoga mat or similar although it is also often practised sitting in a chair or on the floor or even standing. There are no physical requirements.

Yoga Nidra is an ancient practice, first mentioned in the Upanishads. But this version of yoga Nidra - iRest Yoga Nidra - was developed over the past 50 years by Dr Richard Miller (a yogic scholar and practitioner and a clinical psychologist). It draws on Dr Miller's yogic knowledge and also his experience as a psychologist.

iRest is very adaptable - it can be used as a spiritual practice and also as a tool for psychological healing. Practising iRest regularly has been shown to help people reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety and insomnia, deal with daily stresses, reduce the tendency for relapse in people with chemical dependency, manage chronic pain, overcome symptoms of trauma and increase perceptions of quality of life.

The practice offered here will vary each session – with a focus on different themes. It will be suitable for the general population and also safe for people with symptoms of trauma, anxiety and stress.

What to expect

This session will comprise a brief introduction. A practice of about 30 minutes and there will be some optional time at the end if there are any questions.
