Spring conference - Sat. 14th April 2018, 09.00am- 4.15pm

We are thrilled to welcome Nick Totton as our speaker for 2018.

‘We are all body psychotherapists…’

Taunton Association for Psychotherapy - www.taplimited.org.uk

Nick Totton is a therapist and trainer with nearly 35 years’ experience. Originally a Reichian body therapist, he has explored widely in a number of therapy modalities, and now practices and teaches Embodied-Relational Therapy and Wild Therapy. He has written several books, including 'Body Psychotherapy: An Introduction'; 'Wild Therapy'; 'Not A Tame Lion'; 'Embodied Relating: The Ground of Psychotherapy'; and 'Press When Illuminated: New and Selected Poems'. The political aspects of therapy, the power relations which it uncovers but also sometimes conceals, have always been of central importance in Nick’s work. He has been chair of both Psychotherapists and Counsellors for Social Responsibility, and the Psychotherapy and Counselling Union.

“Embodiment and relationship are inseparable, both in human existence and in psychotherapy. If we explore embodiment, we encounter relationship; if we explore relationship, we encounter embodiment. Therapy is more powerful when the practitioner is able to recognise the constant interplay between these two aspects of being human, and to follow and support the shifts of change from one to the other”. Nick Totton Embodied Relating: The Ground of Psychotherapy (2015)

Nick says, “At this conference we will be exploring the idea that embodied relationship is the ground of psychotherapy - not the essence, or the core, but the ground, from which everything grows, and on which all our theories are erected. It is our bodies which sense and are changed by the state of other bodies, as a result of which we experience feelings and thoughts and impulses.”

In a break from tradition, and because of his reputation as a speaker, we are offering a whole day’s conference with Nick. Be prepared for him to challenge you, to work with you in a practical way and to improvise as the nature of the day reveals itself through interaction with the audience.

During the day the following topics will be discussed:

  • What is embodiment?
  • Why does it matter?
  • Embodiment in a social and political context.
  • How does embodiment fit in with the more familiar themes of psychotherapy and counselling?
  • What is the minimum requirement for working in an embodied way with clients?
  • An embodied approach to trauma.
  • Therapy as play.
