Responsible Sex. Exploring client and therapist responses to rape myths
"Rape myths are defined as prejudicial, stereotyped or false beliefs about rape, rape victims and rapists – combining to create a climate hostile to rape victims" (Burt1980)
This course aims to help therapists explore their own attitudes to sexual violence and how rape myths affect both the therapist and client attitudes to sexual violence.
The course has been successfully run as a BACP professional development day, but is currently sold out in Nottingham, so this is another opportunity for local therapists to attend this highly recommended workshop.
The course includes:
- How rape myths are created – looking at the impact of newspaper media, advertising and cultural influences.
- Why blaming the self or others operates as a form of defence mechanism.
- Understanding how a therapist holding these myths out of awareness can negatively impact client work .
- An opportunity for delegates to identify and challenge their own rape myths acceptance.
- An opportunity for delegates to identify and challenge their own rape myth acceptance.
- An exploration of the mechanism of trauma and how this feeds into rape myths.
