Whether we are working with individual clients or with straight or same-sex couples, attachment history can help us reflect on relational experience.

Whether our client is a ‘Pursuer’ or a ‘Withdrawer’ the behaviour which so challenges their partner is very often a form of attachment distress which is being communicated in an unhelpful way. Participants will leave this event with a map for understanding couple relationships, including:

  • How partners choose each other
  • Why couples fight
  • What makes the difference between a developmental and a defensive couple bond
  • What's going on for clients who can't find a relationship or can't sustain one

All of these will be understood through an attachment lens. We will consider how couple relationships are impacted by: the secure base, caregiving and care-seeking skills and internal working models. We will consider ways that attachment dynamics influence a couple’s sexual relationship.

In couple dynamics, this is introductory. In attachment terms, this is intermediate.

Who is this for?

Individual counsellors and therapists who would like to understand couple dynamics; couple counsellors and therapists who wish to work more deeply with attachment

About the trainer: Anne Power

Anne Power has qualifications from The Bowlby Centre, Westminster Pastoral Foundation, Tavistock Relationships and Relate. Her clinical work has been in voluntary settings, in the NHS and in private practice in London where she now works online with couples and supervisees. She has taught at a number of therapy trainings in London.

Annie interviewed 22 diverse contented couples for her book. She asked them all what had made their relationship last and she used their words to illustrate attachment dynamics. Contented Couples: Magic, Logic or Luck? was published in 2022.

Anne’s first book, Forced Endings in Psychotherapy, investigated the process of closing a practice for retirement or other reasons. Her published papers explore attachment meaning in the consulting room and in the supervision relationship.

Pass it on! Feel free to pass this invitation on to colleagues – everyone is welcome!
