About me

Child & Young People’s Psychotherapeutic Counsellor

www.newcastletherapy.com

I offer a warm, safe and supportive space where children and young people can feel heard, understood and accepted, without pressure to talk before they are ready.

I work in a child-centred and therapeutically creative way, using talking therapy alongside play, art, games, creative activities and sand tray work. I believe therapy doesn’t always have to mean sitting and talking, and I adapt my approach to suit each child and their individual needs.

I support children and young people experiencing anxiety, big emotions, low self-esteem, grief and loss, difficult life experiences, friendship difficulties and school-related challenges, including Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA).

I have a particular interest in EBSA and supporting young people to understand the emotions and experiences underlying their difficulties with school, while developing greater self-awareness, confidence and coping strategies.

I am a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP) and work in accordance with their ethical framework.

Most importantly, I believe in building a trusting therapeutic relationship where each child can feel safe to be themselves, explore what they are experiencing and work towards positive change at their own pace.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a First Class BA (Hons) degree in Childhood, Youth & Family Studies and a Level 6 Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling for Children & Young People.

My training and experience includes working with children and young people across both primary and secondary settings, supporting a range of emotional and wellbeing needs.

My therapeutic approach is integrative and draws on Transactional Analysis, person-centred therapy, attachment and child development, alongside trauma-informed and creative approaches.

I also have additional training in areas including safeguarding, early trauma and adverse childhood experiences, autism, ADHD and child protection.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

Before starting therapy, I offer a free 15-minute introductory call with a parent/carer to discuss your child and whether I’m the right therapist for them.

Building a trusting relationship comes first. Your child doesn’t need to know what they want to talk about we can take time to get comfortable and work things out together, at their own pace.

If you’re concerned that your child isn’t quite themselves or is struggling with their emotions, confidence, friendships or school, you don’t need to wait until things reach crisis point. I’m here to make taking that first step as simple and comfortable as possible.
