About me

  • Tired of scrolling through therapist profiles that all sound the same?
  • What if therapy had a clear beginning, a middle, and a meaningful end?

Integrative Counselling and Coaching offers something different...

Most people arrive at therapy not knowing what to expect, how long it will take, or whether it will really help. Personal Consultancy is a structured four-stage model that combines the reparative depth of counselling with the forward movement of coaching, so you get reflection and momentum in one process.

I’m Ryan Karter MBACP MSc MA BA (Hons), a dual-trained integrative therapist and coach, and founder of The Karter Consultancy (TKC). I created TKC to offer something different for people who are struggling in life and unsure which type of therapist or coach to turn to. Through integrative counselling and coaching, delivered within the Personal Consultancy model, I offer a collaborative, 360° multi-faceted approach that combines depth, structure, and direction. My work is also informed by neuroscience, combining emotional understanding with practical psychoeducational techniques that help new ways of thinking and feeling take root over time.

My ultimate goal is to help you reach a point where therapy is no longer needed...in other words, to make myself redundant. Together, we will work towards meaningful, lasting change so that you feel more able to move forward independently, equipped with the insights and skills to lead a purpose-driven life.

Who I Work With
I welcome all adults both women and men aged 18 and over - whether you are new to therapy, or have tried it before and want a different approach.

Areas I specialise in include:

  • Addiction, including alcohol, substances, gambling, spending, sex, pornography, mobile phone use and social media
  • Men’s mental health and wellbeing (although I work with both men and women)
  • Midlife, ageing and mortality
  • Identity issues, including self esteem and low confidence
  • Intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviours
  • Dating and relationships, including modern dating challenges, online and app-based dating, and relationship difficulties
  • Recurring patterns of behaviour and thinking that feel hard to shift

Training, qualifications & experience

I hold an MSc in Integrative Counselling and Coaching from the University of East London and am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). My training combines counselling and coaching in an evidence-based way, and I work from the Personal Consultancy model, which brings together the depth of counselling with the forward movement of coaching.

Alongside my private practice, I bring clinical experience from addiction work at ASCA in Richmond, supporting individuals and families affected by alcohol and substance misuse. I also hold an MA in Applied Anthropology, Community and Youth Work, validated by the National Youth Agency, and a BA (Hons) in Management Studies.

My background includes more than 17 years of professional experience working with children, young people, adults, and families across charities, local authorities, NHS, schools, and community settings. This has included work with autism, learning difficulties, physical impairments, severe mental health challenges, men’s mental health, anxiety, depression, burnout, OCD, trauma, and relationship difficulties.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Areas of counselling I deal with

Other areas of counselling I deal with

I also work with clients who are feeling stuck, overwhelmed or caught in repeated patterns that no longer feel helpful. This can include stress, burnout, low self-esteem, confidence issues, shame, indecision, relationship difficulties, emotional isolation, and a general sense of being lost or directionless. My approach is especially helpful for people who want to understand what lies beneath the surface and make changes that feel both meaningful and sustainable.

What's Different About the TKC Approach?
Our work together will be purposeful and collaborative, with an emphasis on helping you move beyond repeated, unhelpful patterns so that you can build more clarity, steadiness and self-understanding. I aim to offer a space that is honest, respectful and supportive, while also being appropriately direct where that is useful.

I often work with both the deeper and the more practical side of change. This can include understanding unconscious patterns, exploring what lies underneath current difficulties, and then building new habits, boundaries and responses that feel more sustainable in everyday life. The brain responds extremely well to repetition of behaviours and ways of thinking, until they become fully ingrained and automatic. It's at this point where the integration of counselling and coaching comes to fruition.

And finally...
As an alternative to conventional therapy, I also offer walk-and-talk therapy in suitable outdoor locations in the borough of Richmond upon Thames, which can be a helpful option for clients who find movement or being outside easier than sitting in a room. A free 15-minute initial consultation is available before booking a first full session, so you can explore whether we feel like a good fit. The first full session is half price.
