About me

I offer one to one therapeutic counselling for adults ‘in the room’ at Clifton Down and Old Market, Bristol and in Yatton, North Somerset.  I also offer online sessions.

My practice training and experience is integrative which means that I combine and apply more than one theory and method of practice (E.g., Person-Centred, Psychodynamic, Gestalt, CBT) according to need.

My style is warm, compassionate and validating and I would aim to support you in thinking through the challenges that you might be facing in your life. This would be with a view to you feeling less troubled, clearer, and more confident and equipped to manage.

Training, qualifications & experience

Advanced Diploma in Counselling, Level 4 (MNCPS Accred)

Diploma in Eating Disorders

BACP  Registered Member

My background is in social work, initially working residentially alongside young people with profound sensory impairments, and later moving on to child safeguarding, assessment and therapeutic work with children and families.  I have a long-held interest in the importance of building a safe and trusting relationship as the basis for therapeutic change.

During my previous career, I received training in family therapy, solution focused brief therapy, and time-conscious psychodynamic counselling.  I also studied child development and attachment theory in some depth.  I have worked directly with children, young people and parents in crisis, as well as foster carers, adopters and those seeking alternative routes to parenthood.

In recent years, I have undertaken further qualifying training in counselling as well as continuing professional development (CPD) training in trauma and attachment informed counselling and psychotherapy.  I hold a special interest in Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) and attachment informed relational work with those who have suffered developmental trauma.  I also have a Diploma in Eating Disorders and can work with those who are struggling with food, eating and compulsive exercising.

I have experienced both long-term and short-term psychotherapy and counselling as a client and therefore have some appreciation for what its like to sit in the opposite chair.

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
